A Pair Of Eight Run Fifth Innings Leads UMary To A Sweep Of Bemidji State

BISMARCK, ND – There was something about the fifth inning for the University of Mary softball team today. The Marauders recorded eight runs in the fifth inning in both games to eight run rule the opposing Bemidji State Beavers. Today's games featured a total team effort with every single Marauders athlete recording a hit on the day and several recording multiple. Kylie Alto headlined game one by blasting a grand slam homerun to put all the momentum on the Marauders side in route to an eight run fifth inning. In game two it was Kasidy Chileen who had the big game at the plate with a homerun and a triple that knocked in the game winning run. Chileen and Mariah Sanchez tied for a team high of four total hits between the two games.
 
With today's sweep the Marauders record improves to 21-25 overall and 12-14 in NSIC play.
 
GAME 1 University of Mary 9 Bemidji State 1
Four different Marauders recorded a pair of hits in game one against the Beavers. Kaitlyn Alvarado continued to do it all for UMary, recording two hits, including a double and pitching a two hitter from the circle. With the game tied up at one run each entering the fifth inning the Marauders exploded for eight runs. Chileen got things going with a single to knock in the first run. An Alvarado double scored Chileen to give UMary two runs. That's when Kylie Alto came to the plate and smoked a grand slam to center field to put all of the momentum on the side of the Marauders. Chileen, the same one who started the inning, ended it by hitting a single to center field to bring home two runs to give UMary the win, 9-1.
 
PIVOT POINT
A tremendous fifth inning took a tied ball game and turned it into the Marauders run ruling BSU. Kylie Alto's grand slam was a big part of the Marauders eight run fifth inning.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Kaitlyn Alvarado earned the win from the mound, only allowing two hits and striking out three.
 
STAT OF THE GAME
Kylie Alto hit her team leading eighth homerun of the season. This one was extra special as it was a grand slam in the seniors final time playing at the UMary softball field.
 
GAME 2 UMary 13 BSU 5
For the second straight game the Marauders scored eight runs in the fifth inning to claim victory. Every single UMary player recorded a hit on the game with five different athletes recording a pair of hits. Kasidy Chileen and Mariah Sanchez led the way for the Marauders. Chileen hit a triple and a homerun to knock in four runs. Sanchez had two hits for three RBIs. The Marauders trailed 4-0 to start the game but that did not last long as UMary came storming back. A two run shot by Kasidy Chileen gave the Marauders their first lead of the ball game 5-4 in the second inning. The game entered the fifth inning locked at five runs each. UMary then went off for eight runs in the inning. The runs started when the Beavers tried to catch Paige Matsuki stealing second. The throw failed to get to second in time and gave Kaitlyn Alvarado just enough time to steal home. A bunt by Alto knocked in another run. Two more came across with a Sanchez single to center field. A triple by Chileen knocked in two runs to give the Marauders the 13-5 win.  
 
PIVOT POINT
Another tremendous fifth inning by the Marauders propelled them to victory. Deadlocked at five runs each, UMary went off for eight runs in the bottom of the fifth to claim victory.

Every single player recorded a hit on the game with five different athletes posting a pair of them. The Marauders 14 hits in game two ties their season high in NSIC play this year. 
 
ON DECK
The Marauders head to Winona State and Upper Iowa for the last two regular season doubleheaders this year. UMary will take on WSU on Saturday, April 27 at 1 PM and 3 PM. They will follow that up with games against UIU on Sunday, April 28 at 12 PM and 3 PM.
