BISMARCK, ND – The University of Mary softball team earned a split against Minnesota State during their home opener. A tremendous effort on the mound by Backes led UMary to a 3-2 victory in the second game of the day. UMary fell 10-1 in the first game.

Kasidy Chileen all blasted homers on the day. The Marauders improve to 11-13 with today's split.
GAME University of Mary 1 Minnesota State 10
Rebekkah Keller and
Kasidy Chileen each recorded a pair of hits to lead the Marauders from the plate. Chileen blasted a solo homerun to give the Marauders their lone run of the game. 15 hits by Minnesota State proved to be too much for UMary to overcome with the Marauders falling 10-1.
PIVOT POINT
A four run third inning by the Mavericks pushed a previously close game out of reach for UMary.

Kasidy Chileen sent a laser out of the park for a solo homerun to give the Marauders a run to close out the game.
GAME 2 UMary 3 MSU 2
A pair of homeruns and great pitching by Backes led the Marauders to a big win over MSU. A shot out of the park in the second inning gave UMary an early lead and then a two run shot in the fourth put them ahead for good. Backes pitched a stellar game from the mound to ensure the score stayed that way.
PIVOT POINT
With the Marauders trailing 2-1,
Emma Noble blasted a two run shot to give the Marauders a 3-2 lead that would hold until the end of the game.

Brieann Backes pitched a complete game with five strikeouts and only allowed one earned run.

With the bases loaded for MSU and Backes behind in the count 3-0, the Marauders senior leader pitched three straight strikes the get the Marauders out of the jam in the sixth inning.
