Hopes for Marauders weekend sweep dashed by Warriors

WINONA, MN – The University of Mary men's basketball team's hopes for a weekend road sweep were dashed by the dynamic shooting of Winona State University. The Warriors were nearly automatic from behind the arc in the opening half and shot their way past the visiting Marauders 84-56.

Coming off a 78-72 win at Upper Iowa, the Marauders settled for a weekend split as the Warriors grabbed a large lead in the first half and coasted to the win.

Tom Kubank hit treys on the Marauders first two possessions to give UMary an early 6-5 lead but a barrage of three-pointers from Winona State would sink the visitors. The Warriors connected on their first six attempts behind the arc before missing to build a 25-20 lead. The game then took a downturn for the Marauders as Winona State outscored UMary 18-3 to claim a 43-23 lead at intermission. The Warriors made 10-of-11 3-point shots and connected on 61 percent of their field goal attempts in the first half.

While the Warriors didn't shoot nearly as well in the second half, the Marauders couldn't gain any traction offensively and were unable to close the gap.

Kubank led the Marauders with 14 points in the game. Wyatt Carr came off the bench and added 11. Both hit three treys for UMary. Matthew Kreklow added six points, five rebounds and four assists in the game.

Mason Domask scored a game-high 16 points for the Warriors, making all four of his 3-point attempts. Caleb Wagner added 14 points, made all three trey attempts, and added five assists.

A frigid night from the floor, UMary hit just 34.5 percent of its field goal attempts and was 7-of-26 behind the arc. Winona State shot 53.4 percent for the night and was 13-for-24 on 3s.

The Marauders (11-13 overall, 8-10 NSIC) continue their road trip with a visit to Bemidji State University and the University of Minnesota Crookston on Feb. 15-16.
