BEMIDJI MN – Struggling to find a way to score, the University of Mary men's basketball team started their final regular season road trip of the year with a 70-47 loss at Bemidji State University, giving the two teams a split on the year. The Marauders defeated the Beavers 83-66 three weeks ago.
Jaylan White led UMary with 11 points. The only UMary player in double figures, the junior guard hit 3-of-6 shots and added four rebounds.
Dennis Austin III had nine points and two blocks.
Richard Brown came off the bench to score eight points by connecting on half of his eight field goal attempts and hauled down a team-high six rebounds.
Four players reached double figures for the Beavers. Jacob Hoffman had a game-high 12 points and Ja Morgan and Allen Anderson each had 11. Morgan also had seven assists and two steals.
The Marauders, who posted a season-low field goal percentage of 28.1 percent, missed their first nine shots of the game and trailed 14-0 just five minutes into the contest. On the flip side, the homestanding Beavers made nine of their first 15 shots and grew their lead to 22-4 eight minutes into the contest. BSU never trailed in the game and maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the night.
Besides struggling from the field, UMary (11-14 overall, 8-11 Northern Sun) made just 12-of-24 free throws. BSU (10-14, 7-13) connected on 44 percent of its shots, made 9-of-27 attempts behind the arc and hit 11-of-15 free throws.
UMary finished +4 in turnovers but lost the rebounding battle 49-35. However the Marauders held a 14-13 edge in offensive rebounds and both teams had 15 second-chance points.
The Marauders conclude their weekend road trip with a visit to the University of Minnesota Crookston on Saturday, Feb. 16. Game time Is 5:30 pm.
