UMary Softball Falls In First Two Games Of Season

LAS VEGAS, NV – The University of Mary softball team opened up their season at the Desert Stinger in Las Vegas today. The Marauders were able to put up six runs in each of their two ball games but it proved to not be enough with UMary dropping both games. The Marauders fell to MSU Billings 11-6 to start the day before losing to Humboldt State 7-6.
 
GAME 1 MSU Billings 11 University of Mary 6
A combined 17 runs and 22 hits were recorded between the two teams in the offensive battle. Kaitlyn Alvarado got the start on the mound and falls to 0-1 to start the season. 
 
PIVOT POINT
UMary trailed just 4-2 when the YellowJackets rallied together five runs in the bottom of the fourth off of five hits. 
 
The Marauders attempted to make a comeback, outscoring MSUB 4-2 in the final three innings but it was too little too late to make the comeback. 
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Kaitlyn Alvarado pitched four innings. She gave up 10 hits and seven earned runs. 
 
Rebekkah Keller was 4-for-5 with two RBI's.
 
Kasidy Chileen went 2-4 with two RBI's
 
STAT OF THE GAME
UMary left ten runners on base in the game. two in each of the first, third, sixth and seventh innings.
 
GAME 2 Humboldt State 7 UMary 6
A big first and sixth inning by Humboldt State propelled them to victory over UMary. The Jacks put together three runs in each of those innings. UMary recorded three runs of their own in the second inning and two in the seventh but it was not enough to overcome the Jacks.
 
PIVOT POINT
 UMary tied things up heading into the bottom of the seventh inning at six a piece. The Jacks successfully converted on a squeeze play for a walk off win. 
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Haley Berube went 2-for-4 with three RBI's.
 
Paige Matsuki scored two runs.
 
Brieann Backes struck out three batters. She gave up nine hits and seven earned runs. 
 
Keller had two hits.
 
Chileen had two hits and scored a run. 
 
STAT OF THE GAME
UMary left 12 runners on base, including three in the sixth inning.
 
ON DECK
The Marauders will continue their action at the Desert Stinger tomorrow, February 2 at 1:30 PM against California State University, Dominguez Hills.
