UMary Women’s Basketball Gets Weekend Sweep With Win Over Minnesota Crookston

CROOKSTON, MN – The University of Mary Women's Basketball team earns the weekend sweep with a big win over Minnesota Crookston. A combined 46 points by Askvig, Gillette, and Bohl led UMary to a 63-58 victory.

With the win the Marauders improve to 16-7 overall and 14-6 in NSIC play.

The Marauders got off to an uncharacteristically slow start missing their first 12 shots and taking nearly seven and a half minutes to get their first bucket of the game. The first half was very low scoring for both teams with UMary leading 20-19 heading into the break.

Despite the slow shooting start, the Marauders were able to post impressive shooting percentages from deep and from the field. The Marauders knocked down 42.6 percent of their shots from the field on the game including 55.6 percent in the second half. UMary shot 50 percent from behind the arc during the game and an impressive 66.7 percent during the second half. The Marauders outshot the Golden Eagles from the field and from three.

A 43 point explosion in the second half led the Marauders to victory. A jumper by Cassie Askvig gave the Marauders their largest lead of ten points with four minutes left in the ball game. Good free throw shooting down the stretch allowed the Marauders to clinch victory.

Gabbie Bohl recorded a team high of 18 points for the Marauders. She added eight rebounds and three big blocks to her stat line.

Cassie Askvig followed up last nights double-double with another big game. The junior recorded 17 points, nine rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal. Askvig made 2-3 from deep and 4-6 from the charity stripe while shooting 46 percent from the field.

Coral Gillette continued her hot shooting from deep, knocking down 3-6 from behind the arc. The sophomore made both of her free throws for a total of 11 points on the game. Gillette posted a game high of two steals.

The Marauders played stout defense tonight, recording game highs in both steals and blocks.

The Marauders return home next weekend for their final two home games of the regular season. The Marauders kick off the weekend against Northern State on Friday, February 22 at 5:30 PM. They will follow that up with a big game against the NSIC's top team MSU Moorhead on Saturday, February 23 at 3:30 PM.
