Marauders Use Dominant Defense To Create Offensive Opportunities In Win Over Mayville State

BISMARCK, ND – A combined 57 points from Cassie Askvig, Lauren Rotunda, and Lexie Schneider propelled the University of Mary women's basketball team to an 83-57 victory over Mayville State. UMary was able to get to the free throw line against the Comets and they took advantage, knocking down 26 shots from the charity stripe while shooting 83.9 percent. After a slow start in the first quarter, UMary took control for the final three quarters of play, extending their lead each of the last three quarters. UMary took advantage of turnovers, outscoring the Comets 29-1 in points off turnovers, recording 18 steals on the game.

With the win the Marauders improve to 5-3 on the season.
 
FIRST HALF BREAKDOWN
Mayville State claimed a 22-18 lead after the first quarter but UMary's offense and defense turned it up in the second quarter, outscoring the Comets 20-9 to take a seven point lead into half. A 13-3 run to close out the half put momentum on the Marauders side heading into the second half. Lexie Schneider led the way with 11 first half points. Cassie Askvig added nine.
 
SECOND HALF BREAKDOWN
Lauren Rotunda and Cassie Askvig put on a show in the second half with Rotunda putting up 11 points and Askvig posting 14 to help the Marauders extend their lead. The Marauders outscored Mayville State by 12 in the third quarter and seven in the fourth to extend their lead to 26 when the final buzzer rang. UMary shot 50 percent from the field in the fourth quarter to help seal the deal.
