Big Games By Askvig, Williams, and Dvorak Propel Marauders To Fourth Straight Win

BISMARCK, ND – The University of Mary women's basketball game featured two double-doubles, four players scoring double figures, and a big win over conference foe Minnesota State. A 19 point, 14 rebound game by Cassie Askvig propelled the Marauders to a huge 14 point victory over the Mavericks, 85-71.

With the win, UMary improves to 9-2 on the season and 7-1 in NSIC play. MSU falls to 5-7 on the season and 2-6 in the conference.

The Marauders protected their home court for the sixth time this season improving to an undefeated 6-0 in the McDowell Activity Center. The win extends UMary's win streak to four games.

UMary had an uncharacteristically slow start to the ball game. The Marauders who are one of the best teams in the country when it comes to shooting percentage, shot only 29 percent from the field in the first half. Despite a slow start shooting, the Marauders stout defense kept UMary in the game and allowed them to hold a two point lead going into the half.

UMary figured things out and came out in the second half with the hot hand. The Marauders put up an outstanding 29 points in the third quarter. They followed that up with an equally impressive 24 point fourth quarter to seal the deal.

Every time the Mavericks snuck their way back in the ball game the Marauders seemed to knock down a clutch three pointer to put the game back out of reach.

MSU worked their way within three points with just over six minutes left in the fourth quarter. A clutch Jordyn Jossart three ball followed immediately by a trey from Cassie Askvig put a stop to any run by the Mavericks. Tonya Dvorak pitched in a three and a few clutch free throws as UMary went on a 16-3 run to put the game out of reach.

Macy Williams continued to distribute the rock and knock down clutch jumpers. The sophomore put up 15 points to go along with her game high of six assists.

Freshman Tonya Dvorak added 15 points and three assists on the day.

Gabbie Bohl posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. She added two blocks on the game.

Coral Gillette knocked down three clutch three pointers for a total of nine points. The Bismarck, ND native added a game high of three steals.

UMary attempted 33 free throws and knocked down 72.7 percent of them including 79 percent in the second half.

The Marauders outscored the Mavericks 15-7 on points off turnovers during the game.

Sharing the ball was the name of the game for UMary tonight. The Marauders posted 19 assists on 25 field goals.

UMary hits the road for a four game road trip starting next week. The Marauders will attempt to sweep Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State next weekend. UMary will take on UMD on Friday, January 11 at 5:30 PM in Duluth, MN. They will follow that up with a game against SCSU on Saturday, January 12 at 3:30 PM in St. Cloud, MN.
