Power game propels Marauders to split on Day 3 of Florida spring games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT FL – A pair of long balls by the University of Mary softball team rallied the Marauders to a win in the day's opener, earning the Marauders a split on day three of the squad's spring trip to Florida. UMary edged Assumption 5-3 in the opener before dropping a 6-2 decision to Nyack.
 
Trailing Assumption 3-0 entering the bottom of the fourth inning, UMary made its move. Following a leadoff walk to Rebekkah Keller, Colleen Crutchfield crushed a two-out two-run home run to close the gap to 3-2.
 
UMary tied the game in the fifth when Rachael Laetsch scored Kylie Alto with a sacrifice fly.
 
Paige Matsuki provided the Marauders their first lead of the game with a home run to lead off the sixth inning. UMary tacked on a second run on an Alto RBI double that scored  Crutchfield.
 
The Marauders spread their six hits among six different players. Crutchfield scored twice and drove in a pair.
 
Brieann Backes overcame two-run first inning runs to claim her third straight win. The junior scattered eight hits and one walk over her seven inning complete game. She finished with three strikeouts.
 
The Marauders saw their four-game win streak end in the 6-2 loss to Nyack. One day after beating the Warriors 3-0, Nyack jumped on the Marauder early.
 
Keyed by a pair of doubles, the Warriors scored twice in the bottom of the first inning. Two more doubles in the third and a double and a home run in the fourth inning increased the Warriors advantage to 6-0.
 
UMary broke onto the scoreboard in the seventh. Alto cracked a solo home run with one out. Lauren Lunt followed with a pinch-hit single and scored the Marauders second and final run on a base hit by Kasidy Chileen.
 
Alto led the Marauders with two hits in three at bats, posting a run scored and an RBI on her home run.
 
The Marauders conclude their Florida trip with games against Bentley and the College of Saint Rose on Wednesday, March 6.
