Walkoff loss hurts Marauders as Peacocks sweep doubleheader

FAYETTE, IA – In a series moved forward two days in an effort to beat potential poor weather, the University of Mary baseball team suffered their second walk-off loss in four games as host Upper Iowa University swept the Marauders 4-0 and 8-7 in a Northern Sun doubleheader.

TURNING POINT
A 2-run home run in the first inning by Zackary Cain provided all the run support Colin Lacey needed in the contest. With two outs in the opening stanza, Cain hit a home run to right field on a 1-0 pitch from Alec DeMaria.
 
Upper Iowa also added two runs with two outs in the fourth inning on a hit and a bases loaded walk.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Kenny Slominski retired all seven hitters he faced in 2.1 innings of relief. He struck out three hitters, including the first batter he faced with two outs and the loaded in the fourth inning.
 
Connor Doll had his first multi-hit game of the season, finishing 2-for-3.
 
Each of the first six hitters in the UMary lineup had hits.
 
The Marauders had multiple baserunners in three innings.
 
This was the second time this season the Marauders have failed to score in a game this season.
 
Zachary Cain was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a home run and two RBIs for Upper Iowa.
 
UMary was 0-2 in steal attempts. Upper Iowa was 2-for-3.
 
STAT OF THE GAME
Marauders pitchers Alec DeMaria and Kenny Slominski held the Peacocks to just five hits in the game over six innings. UMary had eight hits off Colin Lacey, who pitched a complete game shutout for the Peacocks. Lacey struck out four without walking a hitter and improved to 2-0 on the year.

TURNING POINT
In a high-scoring game, Upper Iowa posted a walkoff win when Klosterman doubled to left center with two outs on a 2-2 pitch to score Cain.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
With one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Cain walked with one out and took second on a passed ball. After Austin Ell struck out Jacob Greco looking on a 2-2 pitch, Ell was beaten by Connor Klosterman with a walk-off double to left center. It was the fourth and final time the Peacocks had taken a lead in the game.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Austin Ell suffered a tough loss for the Marauders. The senior lefty allowed just one hit, one walk and one run in 2.2 innings of relief. He also struck out one hitter.
 
The run pattern was the same for both teams. UIU scored three times in the first and UMary followed with three in the third. After the Peacocks scored two in the fourth the Marauders returned with two in the fifth. After UIU scored two in the sixth UMary evened the game 7-7 with two in the seventh.
 
Both teams committed two errors. UMary's miscues resulted in three unearned runs while UIU gave up four unearned runs with their two errors.
 
Freshman Mason Huntley came off the bench and recorded three hits. He also scored a run and drove in one run. He was the only UMary player with multiple hits.
 
Six other Marauders also had hits... Travis Stevens drove in two runs with a double. Jaxon Ford doubled and scored a run… Jesus Payan and Doll joined Huntley with having a run scored and an RBI.
 
Cain was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs for Upper Iowa… Klostermann was 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBIs.
 
STAT OF THE GAME
Marauders pitchers allowed four walks and struck out seven. Upper Iowa allowed six walks and struck out just three.
 
ON DECK
The Marauders and the Peacocks conclude their four-game NSIC set with a doubleheader on Friday, March 23, in Fayette, IA. First pitch at Robertson Woods Field is at noon.
