BISMARCK, ND – Massive performances by the University of Mary's duo of Cassie Askvig and Gabbie Bohl sparked the Marauders to a big conference win over conference foes Minnesota Duluth. On a night where Gabbie Bohl tied her career high of 30 points, UMary took down UMD 82-76.
With the win the Marauders improve to 5-1 on the season and 3-0 in NSIC play. UMary handed the Bulldogs their first loss in conference play. UMD falls to 3-1 on the season and 2-1 in the conference.
Misses were a rare occurrence for UMary today, the Marauders shot 61.2 percent from the field on the game including an outstanding 75 percent in the second half.
A big 14 points first half by Cassie Askvig led UMary into the half with a 37-28 lead. A Coral Gillette three in the final minute of the half proved to be a big momentum boost for the Marauders as they went into the half.
A three pointer and a nice pull up jumper by Macy Williams kicked off the second half for the Marauders and kept the momentum going. The Marauders strung together a 9-0 run later in the third to take their largest lead of the game (21). UMary would head into the fourth with a 16 point lead.
The fourth quarter featured the most points seen in a quarter all game. The two teams combined for as astounding 52 points in the final 10 minutes of play. Coral Gillette kicked the fourth off with a big three pointer. The sophomore has made her claim as the Marauders clutch fourth quarter shooter, knocking down a big three seemingly every fourth quarter.
The Bulldogs put together a late surge cutting the Marauders lead from 18 to 6 in a matter of five minutes. Big fourth quarters by Bohl and Askvig helped hold off the Bulldogs and seal the deal on a 82-76 victory.
Askvig continued her well rounded play by putting together a 22 point, 13 rebound, 4 assist ball game. The junior was a perfect six for six from the free throw line.
Bohl put up 30 points to tie her career high and led all players with a game high. The junior added eight rebounds and a block to her stat line for the game.
Tonya Dvorak led the Marauders with five assists on the game.
The Marauders dominated the Bulldogs in the paint outscoring them 36-22.
Both teams knocked down seven three pointers on the game. The Marauders shot 41.2 percent from deep.
The Bulldogs were led by Sammy Kozlowski who put up a team high of 25 points.
UMary's 82 points is the most the team has put up in conference play and the most the team has scored since putting up 113 points in the season opener against Yellowstone Christian.
The Marauders will take to the road for the first time in conference play next weekend. They will take on MSU Moorhead on Friday, December 14 at 5:30 PM. They will follow that up with a game against Northern State on Saturday, September 15 at 3:30 PM.
