BISMARCK, ND – Timely three pointers by Coral Gillette and Cassie Askvig late in the game sparked the University of Mary women's basketball team to a thrilling 64-58 victory! The Marauders caught fire as a team from deep in the second half knocking down five big treys on 45% shooting. The hot hand by UMary proved to be very useful in a game that would change leads six times.
The Marauders improved to 3-1 on the season and 1-0 in the NSIC with the win.
The Marauders jumped out to a 9-0 lead to kick off the game thanks to six points by Gabbie Bohl and a trey ball by Macy Williams. The early lead would prove to be UMary's largest lead of the game. Minot State responded with a 10-0 run of their own to make the game competitive once again. UMary then closed out the first quarter on a 7-1 run thanks to a pair of layups by Lexie Schneider and a three by Askvig. This run gave UMary a 16-11 lead heading into the second quarter.
Minot State outscored the Marauders 16-14 in the second quarter but a timely first three pointer of the game for Gillette as time expired gave the Marauders a 30-27 lead heading into intermission.
Gillette started the second half the same way she ended the first, with a three pointer. Bohl followed that up with a three point play of her own, this one coming off of a bucket and a foul. Tonya Dvorak ended the third quarter with a big And One to tie the game at 46 a piece.
Gillette sparked the Marauders with treys on back to back possessions to give the Marauders a 54-49 lead with just 4:15 left to play in the game. Just two possessions later Askvig joined the three point party knocking down one of her own to keep UMary's lead at six points. The Marauders held onto their lead thanks to 7 of 8 shooting from the Charity stripe in the last 1:20 of play. Made free throws by Bohl, Gillette, and Williams clinched the Marauders a 64-58 victory over in-state rivals Minot State.
Gillette led the Marauders with 18 points of 5-8 shooting from behind the arc.
On a night where Bohl was honored for recording her 1,000th career point earlier in the year, the junior recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 boards.
Williams led UMary with four assists and two steals. The sophomore added eight points to her stat line as well.
Schneider posted a near double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
The Marauders return to action at the McDowell Activity Center for back to back home games. The Marauders open weekend play against St. Cloud State on Friday, December 7 at 5:30 PM. They will follow that up with a game against Minnesota Duluth on Saturday, December 8 at 3:30 PM.
