BELLINGHAM, WA – The University of Mary women's basketball team opened action tonight at the Western Washington University Lynda Goodrich Classic. The Marauders kicked off tournament play by taking on the tournament hosts, Western Washington. UMary was led by a scoring outburst by Cassie Askvig who scored 28 points on the night. Despite the big game by Askvig, UMary would fall to the Vikings in a heartbreaker, 73-72.
With the loss the Marauders fall to 1-1 on the season.
Fresh off a win against one of the nations best teams, Azusa Pacific, the Western Washington Vikings came out hot going on an early 15-5 run to take a 21-13 lead early in the game. The eight point lead is the largest lead the Vikings held all game.
The Marauders put together a big second quarter, outscoring the Vikings 28-12 to take a 44-35 lead going into the half. UMary started the second quarter on a 22-4 run. Askvig single handedly outscored the Vikings in the second quarter. The junior knocked down three shots from behind the arc to help her put together a 13 point quarter. Tonya Dvorak pitched in another eight points and two blocks during her second quarter performance.
UMary started the second half by jumping out to their biggest lead of the night (11) off of a layup by Gabbie Bohl. WWU then went on an 16-5 run to tie the game up at 51 a piece. Once the game was tied at 51, the game became an absolute thriller with the teams exchanging the lead, each putting together big runs. .
Askvig and Bohl put on a show in the fourth quarter for UMary. The duo of juniors recorded 14 of the Marauders 17 points in the final quarter of play. The Marauders went on an 13-4 run to take a nine point lead with just 4:30 left in regulation. The Vikings would then reverse roles and go on a 14-2 run themselves to take a three point lead with just seven seconds left in the game. Askvig knocked down a jumper at the buzzer but the two point shot would only be enough to bring the Marauders within one point, falling 73-72 to the Vikings.
The Marauders struggled to get much going in the paint with the Vikings outscoring UMary 40-26 in the paint. UMary was outscored 16-2 on second chance points.
Askvig led all Marauders with 28 points. She added eight rebounds to her impressive game. The forward shot 80 percent from behind the arc, going 4-5.
Gabbie Bohl recorded a near double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds to go along with her three blocks.
Standout freshman, Tonya Dvorak posted 12 points and a game high of four blocks.
The Marauders return to action, tomorrow, November 24 at 9:30 PM CST against Saint Martin's University to close out play at the WWU Lynda Goodrich Classic.
