BISMARCK, ND – A lot of big numbers went up tonight for the University of Mary women's basketball team. 1000 career points by Gabbie Bohl, triple digit points on the game by the team, and five Marauders in double figures were all featured in tonight's game against Yellowstone Christian College. UMary took down the Centurions by a score of 113-59.
With the victory the Marauders improve to 1-0 on the season.
UMary jumped out to a 14-2 lead early in the first and never looked back after that. Askvig had the hot hand to start the game, putting up nine points in the first quarter to propel the Marauders to an early 26-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Coral Gillette started out the second quarter by knocking down a big three pointer while getting fouled, she would head to the line and knock down the free throw to complete the rare four point play. The second quarter was the Marauders most dominant quarter, outscoring the Centurions 33-15 to go into half with a 59-29 lead. Bohl led the Marauders with 15 points going into half, Askvig added 13. Lauren Rotunda posted 11 points and five assists to go into the intermission.
The Marauders did not take their foot off the gas in the second half, continuing to dominate the game. Coral Gillette recorded an astounding four three pointers during the third quarter to give herself a total of six on the day.
Gabbie Bohl received a post feed from Macy Williams late in the third quarter, Bohl went go up strong getting the bucket and the call. The junior would head to the line to convert the three point play. The free throw gave Bohl 1,000 career points. She joins an exclusive crowd, being only the 18th Marauder in history to reach this milestone.
The fourth quarter gave several new faces the opportunity to get some valuable playing time. Shea Heidlebaugh, Kaylee Hinson, and Anna Michaud would all have big quarters to seal the deal on the Marauders 113-59 win.
"It's great to start out 1-0, I was happy that we could get everyone a bucket tonight" stated Head Coach Rick Neumann "I thought we shared the ball fantastic, 35 made field goals, 30 assists on those."
"It's pretty cool, it's something you kind of always work for as an athlete" stated Gabbie Bohl about her 1,000 Career points "End of the day it's really about the team. We have goals this year and that's to win the NSIC championship and get to the tournament."
"We are just really happy for Gabbie Bohl scoring her 1,000 point tonight in the very first game of her junior year, we expect big things from her and she continues to deliver" stated Coach Neumann when discussing Bohl scoring her 1,000 career point tonight.
Bohl led the Marauders with 22 points on the night. She added seven rebounds to that.
Coral Gillette would shoot 60% from behind the arc, knocking down six three pointers on the day. The sophomore recorded 19 points in the game.
Cassie Askvig recorded team highs in both assists (6) and rebounds (9) to go along with her 18 points.
Lauren Rotunda and Jordyn Jossart both added eleven points on the day. Jossart led the team with three steals.
The Marauders are back in action on Saturday, November 17 at 4 PM against Rhema Bible.
