White leads Marauders past Golden Eagles 69-64

CROOKSTON, MN – Jaylan White scored from every spot on the floor and the University of Mary men's basketball team held off a late charge by the University of Minnesota Crookston in a 69-64 road win for the Marauders over the Golden Eagles. UMary never trailed in the game as the Marauders claimed a second straight road win.

Scoring in a variety of ways, from floaters high off the glass to turnaround jumpers in the lane to knocking down shots behind the arc, White led the Marauders with 25 points. Just missing his career-high by two points, the sophomore guard hit all three of his trey attempts and made 10-of-14 shots from the floor. He added four rebounds and two assists.

Trevor Zacher added 13 points for UMary, blocking two shots and snaring three rebounds. Keith Hunter chipped in ten points.

Harrison Cleary, the leading scorer in the Northern Sun, scored 26 of his 29 points in the second half for UMC. He hit four treys, was 9-of-10 at the free throw line and distributed five assists. Ben Juhl added 14 points.

The Marauders made a statement defensively in the first half, holding Cleary to three points on six shots. Despite making only 9-of-29 shots themselves in the first half, including a trio of treys, the Marauders shut down the Golden Eagles attack. UMC hit just 6-of-22 shots as UMary entered intermission leading 23-17.

The second half featured a completely different game as both teams found their offensive footings.

UMary (4-13 overall, 2-11 NSIC) found its scoring touch first, outscoring UMC 21-13 to build a 14-point advantage at 44-30. Cleary soon found his scoring game as UMC (8-11, 5-8) closed the gap to five points at 48-43. Regaining their footing, the Marauders went on a 15-6 run behind nine points from White. The St. Charles, IA, native finished the outburst with a 3-pointer to put the Marauders in front 63-49.

Unable to shake the Golden Eagles, UMC scored 13 of the next 15 points to close the gap to 65-62 with 33 seconds left. White stopped the UMary skid with a pair of free throws to make it a two possession game at 67-62. Juhl came back with a basket but single free throws from Connor Hellebust and Matthew Kreklow sealed the Marauders fourth win of the season.

Both teams shot significantly better in the second half as the two teams combined for 93 points. UMary shot 55.2 percent after the break while UMC hit 48.3 percent.

The Marauders conclude the weekend at Bemidji State University on Saturday, January 20, at 6 pm.
