Dominant team effort leads Marauders past Tigers

BISMARCK, ND – A dominant effort in all phases of the game put the University of Mary men's soccer team back into the win column. Three different Marauders scored goals and UMary dominated the shot chart in a 3-0 victory over visiting Dakota Wesleyan University.

Andre Almquist and Zack Jensen stunned the Tigers both early and late in the first half, earning each of them their third goals of the season. Alberto Asencio sealed the Marauders second win of the season with his first UMary goal late in the match.

The Marauders (2-4-1 overall) held a massive 27-1 edge in shots attempted and a 12-1 advantage in shots on frame. UMary also earned six corner kicks to two for DWU (3-4).

UMary opened the scoring immediately. Just 1:42 into the match, Almquist collected a pass from Nathan Clifford inside the 6 yard box and buried the ball for a 1-0 lead.

The offensive onslaught continued for the next several minutes but Tigers goalkeeper Gaston Miteff made four saves in six minutes to hold the Marauders at bay. UMary's best chance to double its lead came in the 10th minute when a shot by Clifford appeared to clang off both the crossbar and the pipe.

Jensen doubled the Marauders lead in the closing seconds of the first half. Breaking out of the pack, Jensen released his shot from 15 yards out just before Miteff could get to the ball, rolling it into the right side of the net with 35 seconds remaining for a 2-0 lead at intermission.

Asencio added an unassisted goal in the 82nd minute to close out the contest.

In his quietest game of the season, Marauders goalkeeper Ludvig Rhodin only had to make one save to record his second clean sheet this year.

Almquist and Asencio tied for the team lead in shots on goal with three each. Overall eight Marauders posted shots on frame.

After playing four games in 11 days, the Marauders are off until facing Southern Nazarene in a neutral site contest in Hays, KS, on Sept. 28.
