Zogbi, McIlroy helps Marauders navigate past the Storm 3-2 in overtime

HAYS, KS – Guilherme Zogbi da Silva scored two goals and a Joel McIlroy penalty kick in overtime propelled the University of Mary men's soccer team to a 3-2 win over Southern Nazarene University. A neutral site game played in Hays, KS, it was the second straight win for the Marauders.

UMary took advantage of a major mistake by SNU in overtime. With the Marauders having a clear scoring opportunity, Storm goalkeeper Jeff Ray was whistled for a foul and awarded a red card. The result was an ejection from the game for Ray and a penalty kick for UMary.

Toeing the line with one game winning goal already on his young resume, McIlroy stepped forward to take the penalty kick. The freshman from Larne, Northern Ireland, delivered the win, scoring his third career goal and ending the contest at 93:28.

Until the McIlroy game-winner, the Marauders and the Storm took turns scoring throughout the night. Pedro Garcia tallied first at 38:47 on a penalty kick for Southern Nazarene.

Just 58 seconds later, Zogbi da Silva knotted the contest at 1-1 on his first goal of the season. Taking a feed from Michael Hertz, Zogbi da Silva beat the defense and hit the inside of the right post from six yards out.

The Storm regained the lead in the 64th minute. This time, it took a little longer for the Marauders to find the equalizer.

With time running down, Zogbi da Silva scored from just three yards out 81:53 into the match.

The Marauders (3-4-1 overall) had an 8-7 edge in shots in target while the Storm (0-8-1) held the advantage in shots (13-12). UMary held an 8-3 margin in corner kicks.

Ludvig Rhodin posted five saves for UMary. Ray matched Rhodin's total for SNU.

The Marauders remain in Hays and will face Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday, Sept. 30, at 11 am in a second neutral site contest during the week for UMary.
