BISMARCK, ND – Playing on campus for the second and final time of the season, the University of Mary pressed hard but came up short against nationally-ranked Upper Iowa University. The Peacocks scored goals in each half to edge the Marauders 2-1.
UMary held the edge in shots (15-13), shots on goal (11-7) and corner kicks (7-6) plus committed fewer fouls (14 for UIU to nine for UM). Additionally the Peacocks (4-1 overall) were awarded four yellow cards to two for the Marauders (1-4-1 overall).
The Peacocks stunned the Marauders with a long goal off a free kick in the 23
rd minute. Striking the ball from just inside midfield, Ryan Crabtree lofted his shot up over the outstretched arms of Marauders goalkeeper
Ludvig Rhodin and just under the crossbar for a 1-0 Upper Iowa advantage.
The Marauders came out of intermission on fire, gaining two corner kicks and placing two shots on frame in the first eight minutes.
UMary finally broke through in the 67
th minute. Taking a forward pass from
Alberto Asencio about 20 yards out from the goal, Andre Almquist headed the ball into the right side of the net to knot the contest 1-1.
Less than two minutes later,
Nathan Clifford's effort to give the Marauders their first lead of the day was denied when his shot was turned away before the goal line by an Upper Iowa defender.
After going over 20 minutes without a shot attempt, the Peacocks finally found another scoring opportunity and took advantage. Coming up with the ball off a scramble just outside the goal box, Ruairidh Crawford knocked a counter into the right side of the net at 75:14 to take a 2-1 lead.
With time running out, the Peacocks defense regained control of the game. While much of the last 15 minutes was played on the Upper Iowa side of the field, UMary managed just one more shot. Following another foul by UIU,
Pablo Torne's attempt to knot the game in the 89
th minute sailed high.
Nine different Marauders managed shots in the game, with
Jordan Kaubisch,
Joel McIlroy,
Zack Jensen and Almquist each placing a pair of shots on net.
Rhodin finished with four saves for UMary. Connor Rortvedt had six for UIU.
