Box Score 2 ST. PAUL, MN – Behind the power of three extra base hits in the last two innings of the opener and a stellar relief appearance from
Chris Scott, the University of Mary baseball team earned a road split of their midweek Northern Sun doubleheader at Concordia-St. Paul. The Marauders captured game one 8-5 and the Golden Bears grabbed the second contest 11-1.
Two days after earning his first career save in a Marauders 3-1 win over Upper Iowa, Scott picked up his first career win. Entering Tuesday's opener in the fifth inning with the bases loaded, two out and tying run already across the plate, the sophomore righthander induced a popup to
Seth Meide in right field to end the Golden Bears rally.
The Marauders, who had scored the first three runs of the game and also held a 5-4 advantage, immediately responded to retake the lead. With two outs, Meide doubled down the right field line and advanced to third on a CSP error. Starting pitcher
Travis Stevens, who moved to first when Scott entered the game, scored Meide with a single to center on a 2-2 count to push UMary ahead 6-5.
UMary tacked on two more runs in the seventh.
Connor Doll homered to left with one out to double the Marauders lead to 7-5.
Drew Feuerbach immediately followed with a double to left. After a fly ball out, freshman Seth Severson created more separation with a single to left to score Feuerbach.
Looking to rally, back-to-back singles and a wild pitch placed two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh for the Golden Bears. Scott then closed out the Marauders third straight win with a fly out and a pop out to end the threat.
Scott pitched 2.1 scoreless innings for the win. He allowed three hits and no walks and posted one strikeout.
Stevens, who pitched the first 4.2 innings, allowed five runs, though only one was earned. He was 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs driven in.
Feuerbach finished the game 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored. Meide was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Siverson went 2-for-3, scoring a run and driving home a run.
Tanner Holmquist had two hits and two RBIs for the Golden Bears.
In a reversal of fortunes, the Golden Bears scored first in the second game, plating a pair of runs in the first inning. The Marauders halved the deficit in the second after Doll was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Concordia took control of the game with three runs in the third before scoring another trio of runs in the fourth for an 8-1 lead. For good measure the Golden Bears hit the trifecta of three-run innings in the game in the sixth.
Andrew Beyer and Doll both had two hits in the second game for UMary.
Holmquist was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Carter Schmidt homered and was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and four runs batted in.
The Marauders return home to start a six-game home stand with a visit from Northern State University on Friday and Saturday, April 14-15.
