Tudor win in final match lifts Marauders past Wolves in regular season finale

ABERDEEN, SD – On a night of highs and lows for both teams, the University of Mary wrestling team upended Northern State University in stunning fashion. Trailing by two entering the final match, Marauders freshman Dominic Tudor claimed a dramatic overtime win to push visiting Mary to a 20-19 victory over the Wolves.

The Marauders conclude the regular season with an 8-8 record overall and 3-5 mark in the Northern Sun, winning three of their last four duals of the season. The Wolves are 4-12 and 0-7.

Behind a pair of major decisions and a forfeit, Mary jumped out to a 14-0 lead after three matches.

Josh Jensen opened the night with a 10-2 victory over Matthew Leier at 125. Leading 2-1 after one period, Jensen dominated the second stanza, outscoring Leier 7-0 behind a 4-point nearfall, a takedown and an escape.

After the Wolves forfeited 133, Reed Cronin picked up a second major decision for Mary, defeating CJ Voegeli 16-8. Behind a pair of takedowns and a four-point nearfall, Cronin rode a 9-2 first period lead to the win at 141 pounds.

Following a pair of wins for the Wolves at 149 and 157, Paul Michaelson won his fifth straight match at 165, defeating Ben FIchter 10-8. Leading 8-3 after the second period, Michaelson held on in the third. After Fichter pulled within 8-6, Michaelson expanded his lead to 9-6 on an escape. Following another Fichter takedown to pull within a point, the Williston, ND, junior tacked on a point for riding time to provide Mary a 17-7 lead with four matches to go.

The Wolves rally resumed with three straight wins, the final one at 197 on a technical fall for five team points to push Northern State ahead 19-17, their first lead of the day.

Down to the final meeting of the night, two freshman squared off at 285. After choosing the down position to start the second period, Tudor opened the scoring with an escape. Harrison Townsend took the lead in the third on a reversal before Tudor tied the match and sent the battle to overtime with another escape. Harrison jumped out to a 4-2 lead on a reversal in the extra session. Tudor then used a pair of escapes to tie the match before winning the night with a takedown.

Mary next competes at the NCAA Super Regional 3 meet on Feb 24-25.
