ST. CLOUD, MN – University of Mary junior
Paul Michaelson extended his personal winning streak to four but the Marauders couldn't corral top-ranked St. Cloud State University in a Northern Sun dual. The #1 Huskies captured every other match to defeat the Marauders 42-3.
In a high-scoring and the closest match of the night, Michaelson defeated SCSU senior team captain Josh Berg 9-7. Leading 4-3 entering the third period and starting on top, Michaelson doubled his point total with a 4-point near fall. Berg picked up four points in the final period but couldn't catch Michaelson.
Josh Jensen saw his six match win streak end on a 17-0 technical fall to Brett Velasquez, ranked fifth in the country, in the first match of the day at 125.
Tate Barnhardt saw his 12-match win streak evaporate with a 5-1 loss to All-American Mike Rhone at 133. Scoreless after one, Rhone used takedowns in both the second and the third periods to defeat Barnhardt.
SCSU won five straight matches to open the dual before Michaelson stepped up for the win. The Huskies rolled of victories in the last four matches to stay unbeaten in the Northern Sun and move to 16-1 this season. Mary slips to 7-8 and 2-5.
The Marauders close out the regular season at Northern State on February 16.
