Marauders can't slow Vikings in road loss to Augie

SIOUX FALLS, SD – The visiting University of Mary men's basketball team couldn't extinguish the red-hot shooting of Augustana in a 114-81 Marauders loss to the Vikings.

UMary made just 40.7 percent of its shots, including a 9-of-26 effort behind the line. Augie, meanwhile, made 57.1 percent of its field goal attempts, highlighted by a 22-of-35 effort on 3-pointers.

The Marauders did most of their damage at the free throw line, making 24-of-34. Augie made all 12 of its free throw attempts.

Keith Hunter led the Marauders with 17 points, making all seven of his free throw attempts. The junior guard also had five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Jaylan White was 7-of-10 at the line and scored 15 points. The sophomore guard hit 4-of-6 field goals. Matthew Kreklow went 6-of-8 at the line on his way to 12 points. The freshman forward also had a career-best four blocks and seven rebounds.

Trevor Zacher was also in double figures for UMary with ten points. He made both free throws, had four rebounds and made three steals. Connor Hellebust came off the bench and knocked down three treys in four attempts and scored nine points.

John Warren scored a game-high 29 points for the Vikings, making six treys in the game. Steven Schaefer, 5-of-8 behind the arc, scored 17 points. Jordan Spencer hit 4-of-5 3-point attempts and added 14 points.

The Marauders held an early 8-6 lead after a pair of treys by Hunter and Zacher plus a Tom Kubank layup. The Vikings then found their footing, running off 16 straight points. UMary pulled within single digits at 28-19 but an 11-3 run pushed the Marauders deficit back to double digits where it remained the rest of the game.

The Marauders now returns home to start a three-game home stand when Minot State University visits the McDowell Activity Center on December 19 at 5:30 pm.
