Defense, depth showcased in Marauders 81-56 opening exhibition win over Comets

BISMARCK, ND – A new-look University of Mary men's basketball team featuring four new starters and a dozen players who didn't see varsity action last season demonstrated their depth and defensive abilities in an 86-51 exhibition game victory over visiting Mayville State University.

Fourteen players scored for the Marauders and the fifteenth added an assist in the Marauders first game of the 2017-18 season.

Brody Sharkey, a transfer from McCook Community College, led UMary with 14 points. Lone returning starter Trevor Zacher tacked on 13, all in the first half. The senior forward was 3-of-5 behind the arc and added three assists and two blocks. He was also the only UMary player in the game for more than 18 minutes, playing for 22.

Junior forward Tom Kubank chipped in nine points and tied newcomer Keith Hunter for the lead in rebounds with six. Hunter, a transfer from Las Positas College, also had five assists. Jaylan White chipped in eight points and three assists.

"I was happy with our energy and defensive performance and we played hard to the end," said Marauders head coach Joe Kittell. "Everyone had an impact on the win for us. We were glad to play all of our 15 players and they all contributed to the victory."

Following back-to-back three pointers from Zacher and Kubank and a basket by Matthew Kreklow, UMary led Mayville State 34-12 with just under eight minutes remaining in the first half. At intermission the Marauders led the Comets 46-25 as Sharkey scored in the paint as the buzzer sounded.

The Marauders shot 47.7 percent for the game, including a 10-of-20 effort on three-pointers. Defensively UMary held Mayville State to a shooting percentage of 35.2 percent for the night.

Daniel Lindgren led the Comets with a game-high 19 points. Cameron Epps added 11.

UMary continues its exhibition season at Gillette College on Oct. 28 before facing NCAA Division I South Dakota State University on Nov. 12.
