FIVE + 1 NUMBERS TO KNOW
417 The Marauders set an NCAA era team record for rushing yards with 417 in the 30-6 homecoming win over UMC. The previous mark was 364 yards against MSU Moorhead in 2011. The school record is 445 yards against then-Jamestown College in 1989.
235.4 The Marauders are second in the Northern Sun in rushing offense with 235.4 yards per game, despite already facing three of the top five run defenses in the conference (Sioux Falls, Minnesota State, Bemidji State) in the first seven games.
69 The Marauders ran the ball a school-record 69 times against Minnesota Crookston on Saturday. The previous high was 64 earlier this season at Upper Iowa. Entering the year the high was 60, set against UMC in 2011 and 2016.
30 This is the 30th season of Marauders football. After playing a junior varsity schedule in 1987, head coach Jim Driscoll led the 1988 squad to a 27-18 home win in the program's first varsity game. UMary honored the members of the 1988 team - known as The Originals - during the Minot State game.
2.0 One week after posting a career-high 2.5 sacks at Bemidji State, senior captain and defensive tackle
Brock Pittsley followed with two sacks against Minnesota Crookston. Now with five sacks on the season - all in the last three weeks - Pittsley ranks third in the NSIC in sacks... Also junior DT
Jackson Grad posted a career-best two sacks in the game.
- 35 The Marauders set an NCAA era mark for fewest rushing yards allowed in a game after holding UMC to -35 yards on the ground in 20 attempts. Helping the cause was eight sacks for -47 yards. The previous NCAA era low was 41 yards against Minot State in 2014. The school record is -51 yards done twice, the last time against Azusa Pacific in the 2003 playoffs.
HEAD COACHES
Josh Kotelnicki is in his fourth season as the head coach of the University of Mary. He is just the fifth varsity head coach in school history as the team begins its 30th season. Kotelnicki directed the Marauders to a 5-6 record in his first season in 2014 and is 8-34 lifetime (four years). Kotelnicki joined Mary after serving as the associate head coach at NCAA FCS University of North Dakota for two seasons (2012-13) and as UND's defensive coordinator in 2013. A native of Litchfield, Minn., Kotelnicki won an NCAA Division II title as a player at North Dakota and has been on winning teams as a coach at the NCAA FBS, FCS, and Division II levels. After starting his coaching career at UND, he has also worked at Murray State, Truman State, and NCAA FBS Kansas State before returning to UND... In his tenth season leading the St. Cloud State University football program, Scott Underwood posted a winning record in each of his first eight years and owns a career mark of 74-38 overall and 69-32 in Northern Sun games. He was named the 2011 NSIC Coach of the Year after leading the Huskies to a share of the conference title and getting SCSU to a second straight NCAA playoff berth. Underwood has taken SCSU to the NCAA playoffs in three of the last seven years and is second all-time in wins at SCSU. The 1988 graduate of Augustana College was the SCSU defensive coordinator prior to earning the head job.
YEAR IN YEAR OUT
This is the 12th straight season the Marauders have played the Huskies. St. Cloud State is one of five teams Mary has faced every season since beginning NCAA play in 2006. The first two meetings (2006, 2007) were non-conference games. SCSU rejoined the Northern Sun in 2008. Bemidji State, Minnesota Crookston, Northern State and MSU Moorhead are the other four teams.
