Quest for weekend sweep falls short in Marauders loss to #24 Dragons

BISMARCK, ND – After knocking off #25 Northern State University on Friday, the University of Mary women's basketball team entered today's game looking for a weekend sweep of nationally ranked foes. The Marauders dreams were dashed when visiting #24 MSU Moorhead left the McDowell Activity Center with a decisive 73-53 victory.

Mary slips to 9-9 overall and 4-6 in the Northern Sun. The 13th straight win for the Dragons improves MSU Moorhead to 13-1 and an NSIC-leading 10-0.

Battered by a barrage of three-pointers from the Dragons, the Marauders held tight early until a 16-0 run propelled the Dragons to a 31-14 lead at 6:43 of the second quarter. Led by Mia Ham, the Dragons were 4-of-5 on treys during the run.

Mary closed the gap to ten points on a pair of Gabbie Bohl baskets and a Hannah Larson 3-pointer but a pair of treys in the final 48 seconds of the opening half pushed MSUM to a 41-23 lead at intermission.

Down by as many as 23 points in the second half, the closest Mary came was 15 points after a trey by Dani Williams pulled the Marauders within 64-49.

Ham made all seven of her 3-point attempts and the Dragons went a combined 14-of-25 behind the arc. Natalie Van Whye was also perfect on treys, making all three of her attempts. Overall MSUM shot 54.9 percent for the game.

Mary made just 35.8 percent of its shots with a 6-for-16 effort on 3-pointers.

Bohl led the Marauders with 19 points. The freshman center was 7-of-11 from the floor and made all five of her free throws.

Larson was 4-of-5 on treys and scored 14 points. The senior forward also had four rebounds and three assists. Williams hit two 3-pointers and had 10 points.

Ham led all players with 21 points. Cassidy Thorson and Megan Hintz both had 12 points for the Dragons.

The Marauders next visit Concordia-St. Paul and Minnesota State on Jan. 13-14.
