Despite Bohl Double Double, Marauders fall short against Golden Bears

Box Score ST. PAUL, MN – Gabbie Bohl posted her second double double of the season and was one of four University of Mary women's basketball players to reach double figures in points. The freshman's efforts still weren't enough for the Marauders in a 78-68 road loss at Concordia-St. Paul.

Bohl led the Marauders with 16 points and 11 rebounds. The Minot, ND, native was 5-of-6 at the free throw line and has two steals in the game.

A tight contest throughout the night, Mary (9-10 overall, 4-7 NSIC) led Concordia 48-45 after three quarters. Using a 14-2 run that started late in the third and ended with a Hannah Larson jumper in the paint, the Marauders led 54-47 with 8:35 left in the game.

The Marauders advantage was soon whittled away with the Golden Bears (10-7, 6-5) moving in front. Mary briefly regained its lead 61-60 on a Rachel Weir trey with 4:22 remaining but the rest of the night belonged to Concordia-St. Paul.

The Golden Bears ran off ten straight points before Lauren Rotunda made a pair of free throws to pull the Marauders within 70-63. A subsequent 7-2 Concordia push featuring four straight free throws by Mishayla Jones gave the Golden Bears a 12-point advantage with 17 seconds remaining to dash the Marauders hopes for a win.

Free throws played a major role in the Golden Bears late-game performance. Concordia-St. Paul was 10-of-12 at the free throw line in the last 73 seconds. For the game the Golden Bears hit 31-of-34 free throws while the Marauders finished 14-of-18.

Both teams struggled shooting. Mary converted 36.8 percent of its field goal attempts while Concordia-St. Paul made 36.1 percent.

In addition to Bohl, two other freshmen also scored in double figures for Mary. Rotunda, who made all five of her free throw attempts, chipped in 14 points. Cassie Askvig came off the bench and added 11 points and four rebounds.

Larson just missed a double double with 11 points and nine rebounds. One of the top shot blockers in the nation, the senior forward added four blocks and five rebounds.

Weir added eight points, five rebounds and two steals.

Jones made 13-of-14 free throws and led the Golden Bears with 19 points. Anna Schmitt also was 13-of-14 on free throws and scored 17 points. Kyrah Fredenburg added 13 points, 14 rebounds and three steals.

The Marauders conclude the weekend road trip at Minnesota State University on Saturday, Jan. 14, at 4 pm.
