At The Plate: The University of Mary Softball team has a busy week ahead of them as they head out on the road for four doubleheaders in six days to continue the conference schedule. The first pair of contests will be against Northern State University on Tuesday, April 12, followed by the makeup games against Minot State University on Thursday, April 14, with Concordia University, St. Paul, on schedule for Saturday, April 16, and Minnesota State University wrapping up the weekend on Sunday, April 17
For The Record: U-Mary went 2-4 at home last week with splits against Minnesota State University Moorhead and Winona State University, paired with the losses to Upper Iowa University, for a 9-25, 3-12 NSIC record on the year. The Wolves swept the board last week with wins over Minot State, Concordia-St. Paul and Minnesota State to improve to 18-22, 8-8 NSIC so far. The Beavers are reeling from a nine-game losing streak in addition to only one conference win in 14 tries for a 12-21, 1-14 NSIC record on the year. The Golden Bears split with the Dragons last week in addition to their losses to the Wolves to set their record at 12-24, 6-10 NSIC on the year. The Mavericks have hovered near the top of the conference but had a nine-game winning streak snapped when they dropped the pair of games to Northern State, putting their record at 30-11, 13-4 NSIC on the year.
In The Past: The Marauders dropped the only game to Northern State last year as the second half of the doubleheader was cancelled from an encroaching wildfire to put the record at 19-4 favoring U-Mary since 2006. The weather played a big factor in both games last year against the Beavers as U-Mary eventually dropped both games to put the record at 9-7 since both teams started competing against each other at the Division II level in 2006. The Marauders extended their win streak to six games over the Golden Bears after the sweep last year to set the all-time mark at 11-13, while the Mavericks took the split in 2015 with U-Mary clinching a hard-fought game one before surrendering game two to keep the all-time record even at 5-5.
Last One Up: U-Mary managed only two wins last week but both were electrice contests as
MeLanie Rodriguez went the distance in the 4-1 win over the Dragons, scattering six hits over the course of the game while striking out four, with
Kylie Alto's triple in the fourth and
Colleen Crutchfield's home run in the six signaling the difference in the game. Meanwhile,
Brieann Backes pitched all nine innings in the marathon 6-5 win over the Warriors as the Marauders rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh behind a double from
Taylor Mendez and back-to-back home runs from
Amber Gamboa and
Shawnee Zink, with Crutchfield again making the difference with her game-winning double in the ninth to complete the comeback.
On Deck: The Marauders will visit the University of Minnesota Crookston on April 20, will return home to take on Dickinson State University on April 21 and will wrap up the regular season at home against St. Cloud State University and the University of Minnesota Duluth starting on April 23.
