Cougars nip Marauders in early morning contest

Box Score BISMARCK, N.D. – Just hours after posting a season-high in runs, the University of Mary struggled offensively in an early morning contest played in cold conditions. In a game that started at 9 a.m., the Marauders managed just five hits in a 5-1 loss to the University of Sioux Falls.

Game two of the scheduled Northern Sun doubleheader was cancelled due to poor weather conditions.

The Cougars (8-11 overall, 2-1 NSIC) broke onto the scoreboard first with a single run on a run-scoring ground out by Gunnar Peterson.

The Marauders (3-12, 1-2 NSIC) knotted the game in the fifth. Andrew Beyer reached on a Cougars error and eventually scored on a Jason Shaul RBI single to left with two outs.

Wasting no time regaining the lead, Sioux Falls right fielder Matthew Minnick grounded a ball through the left side of the infield to score Rob Johnson for a 2-1 Cougars lead.

After U-Mary was unable to score in the top of the sixth inning, a defensive miscue by the Marauders allowed the Cougars to pull away in the bottom of the stanza. USF scored three unearned runs, the first crossing the plate on a Peterson single through the left side, his second RBI of the game.

Zachary Miller finished his complete game for the Cougars by retiring the Marauders in order in the seventh inning. Miller allowed just five hits and two walks in seven innings while striking our four.

Brad Meyer tossed a complete game for U-Mary. The junior right-hander allowed just two earned runs on eight hits in six innings.

Drew Feuerbach paced the Marauders with two hits in four at bats. He also had a stolen base. Tom Imholte doubled for the lone U-Mary extra base hit.

The Marauders next visit Concordia-St. Paul in a four-game set on April 2-3.
