At The Plate: The University of Mary Softball team will take on Mother Nature in addition to their two conference opponents of the 2016 season as the games against Wayne State College and Augustana University have been moved up a day due to weather concerns. The doubleheader against Wayne State will start at 1 PM on Thursday, March 24, before the Marauders take on Augustana on Friday, March 25 at 12 PM.
For The Record: U-Mary took on some tough competition at the Apple Market Classic down in St. Joseph, Mo., as they came away with a 1-4 record with the only win coming against Missouri Southern State University to put their record at 6-13 going into the NSIC portion of the schedule. The Wildcats are 6-15 on the year so far as they, too, went 1-4 at the Apple Market Classic and feature a 3-5 record at the Dot Richardson Spring Games. The Vikings own a 14-10 record so far after a 1-4 trip to the Desert Stringer and a 5-1 mark at the Apple Market Classic. The Vikings and Wildcats opened up their conference schedule earlier this week as they faced each other in Wayne, Neb., with a split highlighting the doubleheader. Augustana took the first game at a 9-3 clip with Wayne State earning their revenge in the second game with a 9-8 victory.
In The Past: The Marauders were swept by Augustana in the 2015 season in Sioux Falls, S.D., and are 2-14 all-time against the Vikings with their only wins coming in the 2013 season as U-Mary swept the doubleheader in Sioux Falls. U-Mary split with Wayne State last year on the road with the Marauders taking the first game at 3-2 but dropped a narrow 1-0 decision in the second. U-Mary is 10-11 all-time against the Wildcats with the series favoring the Marauders in the past three seasons with a 4-2 record.
Last One Up: U-Mary struggled in the Apple Market Classic last week as they managed only one win in five games with the sixth scheduled contest cancelled due to inclement weather. The Marauders' lone win came against Missouri Southern as they took advantage of a late Lion error in the sixth inning to come away with the 6-2 win. During the week,
Taylor Mendez led U-Mary batters with a .500 mark with eight hits and three doubles,
Demaree Rodriguez followed up with a .412 mark with seven hits and
Shawnee Zink hit .308 with four hits, two doubles and one home run.
MeLanie Rodriguez took the only win on the week as she finished her complete game against Missouri Southern with only six hits given up, three strikeouts, one walk and two runs given up.
On Deck: The Marauders will spend next week on the road as they travel to Bemidji State University on Tuesday, March 29, before facing the University of Sioux Falls on Saturday, April 2, and will wrap up the weekend against Southwest Minnesota State University on Sunday, April 3. The doubleheader against Minot State University has been postponed to a future date and will be played in Minot once the weather clears up.
