Stretch fade dooms Marauders despite career night by Douglas

BISMARCK, N.D. – Devan Douglas exploded for a scoring career-high but the University of Mary faltered down the stretch for the second straight night. Visiting Concordia-St. Paul outscored U-Mary 10-4 in the final thee minutes of the game and the Golden Bears edged past the Marauders 76-72.
 
On Friday night, the Marauders led by three with 3:30 left in what became a 76-71 loss to Minnesota State University. On Saturday, U-Mary held a 68-66 lead with 3:56 remaining in the game against Concordia.
 
A rugged contest that featured 16 lead changes and 14 ties, the Marauders dominated inside while the Golden Bears won the game from the outside. U-Mary outscored CSP 40-24 in the paint, held a 21-9 advantage in second chance points and outrebounded the Golden Bears 43-36, including a 19-7 mark in offensive rebounds.
 
Concordia, however, was 10-of-20 on 3-pointers while U-Mary was 5-of-17. The Golden Bears also shot 50.9 percent for the game to the 37.3 field goal percentage managed by the Marauders.
 
The biggest lead of the night was a 7-point spread Concordia opened early in the game at 12-5. Both teams took turns with the lead and the Golden Bears went into intermission leading 38-34.
 
The second half began with an emphatic dunk by Marquealis Edwards as the Marauders senior split two Golden Bears defenders and rattled the rim on the first possession out of intermission.
 
Both teams took turns out front before a Douglas jumper gave the Marauders their final lead of the game at 68-66 with 3:56 left. Knocking down one of his three treys on the night, Matt Ambriz pushed the Golden Bears in front 69-68. Back-to-back layups by Cole Olstad pushed the Concordia lead to 73-68.
 
A pair of free throws by Douglas with 1:08 remaining pulled the Marauders within a possession at 73-70. After misses by both teams, Ambriz hit a single free throw with 17 seconds left to make it a two-possession game for the Golden Bears at 74-70.
 
Refusing to go away, Douglas hit a jumper with five seconds remaining but is was too little too late for the Marauders. Olstad was quickly fouled as the ball was inbounded and made two free throws to complete the scoring.
 
Douglas ended the night with a career-high 21 points. The senior guard also hauled down seven rebounds.
 
Three other Marauders were in double figures. Bryan Jefferson had 11 points and eight rebounds. Isaac Lindquist recorded 10 points and 12 rebounds. Rickey Suggs chipped in 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds. He made 6-of-9 shots while playing a high-energy 19 minutes.
 
Diallo Powell scored 17 points off the bench and dished six assists. Shea Mandli also had 17 points with four assists. In all five Golden Bears reached double figures.
 
The Marauders slip to 14-10 overall and 9-9 in the Northern Sun with four regular season games remaining. U-Mary is fourth in the NSIC North Division and ninth overall. The Golden Bears are 9-15 and 6-12.
 
U-Mary next visits Bemidji State University and the University of Minnesota Crookston on Feb. 12-13.
