Marauders Ready for Three-Match Week

Tuesday, October 18, 7 p.m. at Minot State
Friday, October 21, 7 p.m. vs. Minnesota State University - Mankato  
Saturday, October 22, 6 p.m. vs. #2 Concordia - St. Paul  
 
The University of Mary (8-12, 3-8 NSIC) is scheduled to compete against in-state rival Minot State (5-15, 0-11 NSIC) at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, and then will host Minnesota State University - Mankato (9-10, 3-8 NSIC) at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21 and No. 3 Concordia - St. Paul (17-2, 9-2 NSIC) at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22 at the McDowell Activity Center … The Marauders are 1-7 in road matches and 3-3 at home this season … Minot State is 1-5 at home … The Mavericks are 3-5 on the road and the Golden Bears are a perfect 6-0 in road matches.
 
UP NEXT: After a three-match week, the Marauders will head back out on the road to take on Winona State at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28 and Upper Iowa at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29 before the end of the month.
 
THE SERIES: Mary leads the series with the Beavers 8-7 in the Division II era including a 3-0 victory earlier this year at the McDowell Activity Center … However, Mary is winless against the Mavericks and CSP. The Mavericks are 12-0 against the Marauders and CSP is 15-0 against Mary. In the 81 sets the Marauders have played against both Minnesota State and CSP, the Blue & Orange have won a total of five sets since 2006.
 
LAST TIME OUT: The Marauders are currently on a two-match losing streak after falling to two NSIC teams last week. Minnesota, Crookston beat the Marauders 3-1 Friday, Oct. 14 and the very next day Mary suffered a 3-1 loss to Bemidji State. Thayna Silva led Mary in total kills in the two matches with 31.
 
MARY AGAINST TOP 25 TEAMS: The Marauders have faced seven ranked teams this season. Unfortunately, the Blue & Orange have lost all seven of those matches. The Marauders have won just one set out of the 22 sets played against ranked teams this year.
 
MARY IN THE NSIC: Losing its previous two matches last week didn't help the Marauders' chances at getting to the postseason. Mary is now in an six way tie for eighth place in the NSIC.
 
BY THE NUMBERS: As a team this year, Mary is averaging 12.96 kills per set compared to its opponents 12.11. The Marauders are posting 12.30 assists per set and hitting .187 as a team. Mary ranks 11th in the NSIC in hitting percentage, seventh in assists, seventh in kills 16th in block, 3rd in service aces and 10th in digs.
 
IMPACT MARAUDERS: Junior outside hitter Lauren Randall leads the team with 309 kills, averaging 4.61 kills per set. She ranks second in the NSIC in total kills and fifth in the NCAA in kills per set. Senior setter Janell Finkbeiner has recorded 650 assists this season and is averaging a team-high 8.90 per set. Senior Alex Brown leads the team with 272 digs and senior teammate Elizabeth Garcia has a team-high 42 total blocks.
 
HELPING HAND: Finkbeiner has recorded double-digit assists in 18 out of the 20 matches this season for the Marauders.
 
CLIMBING TO 1,000: Randall has recorded at least 225 kills in her three seasons as a Marauder. This season she has 309 and that number is climbing. For her career, Randall has recorded 818 kills and is just 182 kills away from 1,000 with nine regular season matches left.
 
SCOUTING THE BEAVERS: MSU is 5-15 overall this season and 0-11 in the NSIC. However, after a change in strategy from head coach Ben Kaszeta, the Beavers are playing with more confidence. In the last five matches sophomore setter Kelsey Dewulf is averaging 35.2 assists per match. Senior Janelle Nagy has recorded double-digit kills in three of the last four matches for MSU. Before that, she had only finished a match with double-digit kills once in the previous 16 matches. Freshman middle hitter Emily Falldorf leads the Beavers in kills with 153 on the year. MSU is hitting .131 as team offensively, which ranks last in the NSIC. Defensively, senior libero Cindy Pelo leads the 296 total digs and freshman middle hitter Hayley Swain is averaging 0.85 blocks per set (57 total).
 
SCOUTING THE MAVERICKS: Minnesota State is 9-10 this season and is tied with Mary in the NSIC with a record of 3-8.  The Mavericks are averaging 12.6 kills per set, 11.9 assists per set and are posting a .200 hitting percentage this season. Senior Haley Fogarty leads Minnesota State with a team-high 4.9 digs per set, which is good enough for fourth best in the NSIC. Senior Krista Hassing is averaging 3.6 kills per set and sophomore teammate Autumn Risch is added 10.3 assists per set.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN BEARS: No. 3 CSP has won four of its last five matches and ranks near the top of the conference in a few categories. CSP is second in the NSIC in assists per set (13.9), kills per set (14.7) and hitting percentage (.321). Leaders of the team are senior Riley Hanson who is hitting .431 this season and has collected a total of 198 kills. Senior outside hitter leads the Golden Eagles with 3.43 kills per set. Senior setter Kasey Williams is averaging 12.19 assists per set, which ranks second best in the conference.
