BISMARCK, N.D. – A close contest escaped the University of Mary women's soccer team's grasp as the Marauders ended an eight-game home stand with a 2-0 loss to Southwest Minnesota State University. The outcome remained in doubt until the Mustangs doubled their lead with 80 seconds left in the game.
The Marauders (2-3-3 overall, 1-2-2 Northern Sun) managed eight shots on frame but couldn't slip a ball past Brienna Dehkes, who was the 2013 NSIC Goalkeeper of the Year as a freshman for the Mustangs (4-4, 3-2). U-Mary goalkeeper
Shelby Buttron also had a busy afternoon, making a season-high 10 saves.
SMSU's Miranda Cadena opened the scoring in the 30
th minute. After picking up a loose ball, she drove home her sixth goal of the season from around 10 yards in front of the net.
The Mustangs sealed the game at 88:40 on a Kylie Redmond counter.
Loren Sellers and
Mykala Benjamin both had three shots on goal for the Marauders.
In addition to its lead in shots on goal, the Mustangs also had an edge in shots (18 to 11) and corner kicks (7 to 2).
The Marauders now take their first road trip of the season, heading to Upper Iowa on Oct. 3 and Winona State on Oct. 5.
