Box Score BISMARCK, N.D. – Most times when a goalkeeper takes over a game, their efforts are limited to the defensive end. When goalkeeper
Shelby Buttron takes over a game, she makes an impact on both ends of the field. The University of Mary senior proved to be a true two-way player, scoring the game-tying goal and posting five saves in the Marauders 2-2 tie with 21
st-ranked University of Central Missouri.
Down one with less than ten minutes remaining in the game, Marauders head coach
Sarah McNulty sent Buttron into the offensive zone on a U-Mary (0-0-1 overall) corner kick. The moved worked to perfection.
Off a scrum in front of the Jennies (2-0-1) goal, both
Destiny Glaser and
Blaire Brookshire had shots denied by UCM defenders on the goal line.
Loren Sellers followed with another U-Mary shot, this one deflecting off Jennies goalkeeper Ana Dilkes. The ball rebounder perfectly to Buttron, who one-timed the ball with authority into the net for her first collegiate goal with just 8:36 remaining in regulation.
Buttron, seeing her first action of the season after being sidelined early by an off-season surgery, had made a couple tough saves earlier in the night to keep the Marauders in the contest. Both Buttron and Dilkes recorded five saves in the game. Neither was forced to record a stop in overtime.
The Jennies scored first on a Jill Ireland goal in the 21
st minute but the Marauders pulled even late in the opening session.
Michelle McGeary made a long run down the left sideline before cutting in at a shallow angle at the end line. After evading a defender to get to the goal, McGeary knotted the game 1-1 in the 42
nd minute on her first counter of the season. Sellers recorded an assist and has provided the help in all three U-Mary goals this season.
Central Missouri looked in control when a defensive lapse allowed Mikala Modiri to walk in alone and score for the Jennies in the 69
th minute.
U-Mary soon took advantage of its lone corner kick of the night to gain a draw. The Marauders had lost to the Jennies each of the previous three times the teams had played one another and it looked like another loss before Buttron found the net.
The Marauders held a narrow 12-11 edge in shots with both teams taking seven shots on frame. The Jennies managed a large 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Marauders continue their eight-game home stand when U-Mary hosts Southern Nazarene University on Saturday, Sept. 13. Game time is noon at the Shiloh Christian athletic complex.
