Box Score 2 ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Despite two last at bat rallies, the University of Mary fell just short in a pair of losses at St. Cloud State University on the final day of the season. The Marauders dropped the opener 4-3 before closing their 2014 schedule with a 7-5 loss.
U-Mary scored once in the top of the seventh in game one and four times in the top of the ninth in game two to throw a score into SCSU.
An
Austin Grundstad run-scoring single through the right side and a
Scott Held sacrifice fly gave the Marauders a 2-0 lead in the third inning of the opener. The Huskies pulled even on a Travis Enger two-run double in the fourth and pulled ahead 4-2 with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Two one-out walks and a passed ball in the seventh placed the tying run in scoring position but the Marauders managed to score just once on a sacrifice fly by
Jason Shaul.
Sam Salveson tossed a complete game for the Marauders in his last career start. The senior from Mandan, N.D., struck out four and allowed eight hits and two walks in his six innings of work.
Grundstad led the Marauders with a 1-for-3 effort with a walk at the plate. He drove in a run and scored once. The Marauders cobbled together just three hits in the game.
Ryan Diers pitched 5.2 innings to get the win for SCSU, striking out four, walking two and giving up three hits.
U-Mary again jumped out to an early lead in the second contest when Salveson scored on a passed ball in the second inning. The Huskies then rattled off seven straight runs, starting with a three-run double by Zak Hoffman. SCSU added two more runs in the fifth and sixth innings for a 7-1 advantage.
Limited to six hits over the first eight innings, the Marauders used three hits, two walks and an error to score four times in the ninth. A groundout by
Alex Deyle and run-scoring singles by Grundstad and
Dwight Mack plated the first three runs before Grundstad scored on a Huskies throwing error. U-Mary would get the tying run to the plate but couldn't complete the comeback.
Grundstad finished his career with a 3-for-5 effort, scoring once and driving in one run. Fellow senior Salveson and freshman
Trenten Hove both were 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Eric Loxtercamp scored three times for the Huskies, drove in one run and had one hit. Kyle Lieser and Brandon Arnold both had two hits and scored twice.
The Marauders, who lost their final 12 games of the season, finish 2014 with a record of 15-35 overall and 6-24 in the Northern Sun. Ranked sixth in the Central region, the Huskies are 35-12 and 24-9 and are the third seed in the NSIC tournament.
