Box Score 2 ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The University of Mary opened its final weekend of the season with a pair of hard luck losses. Following a 7-5 defeat in game one, the Marauders suffered a 2-1 loss in the nightcap on a walkoff single by the Huskies.
Down 6-1 in the opener, the Marauders scratched out four runs in the top of the sixth. An infield single to short by
Derek Somerville scored the first run of the inning and
Andrew Beyer's groundout to the pitcher scored the second. After
Scott Held touched the plate for U-Mary on an SCSU error, the Marauders pulled within 6-5 on a double steal with Somerville taking home.
After SCSU responded with one run in the bottom of the sixth, U-Mary was unable to complete the rally in the 7-5 loss. Reese Gregory struck out three hitters in the seventh inning to pick up his sixth save of the season for SCSU.
Somerville finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored on his 13
th steal of the season. Held scored twice and posted two hits.
Austin Grundstad had two hits and he scored once.
Zak Hoffman was 3-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs to lead the SCSU offense. Zach Hoffman also had a 2-run home run in the game.
The second game was a pitching duel between
Adam Brewers and Logan Spitzack. For the first seven innings, the only run scored was on a Gregory single to center in the fourth.
With Gregory back on the hill for the Huskies,
Jason Shaul homered to right field with two outs in the eighth inning to tie the game. It was the second long ball of the season for the Marauders left fielder.
The Huskies won the game in the ninth. After two singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out, Brandon Arnold singled through the right side to score Cody Rutledge for the walk-off win.
Brewers went 8.1 innings for U-Mary. The senior lefthander stuck out four, walked four, and allowed ten hits and two runs. Spitzack threw seven shutout innings, giving up five hits and two walks. Gregory came on in relief for SCSU in the eighth inning and improved his season record to 9-2 after only allowing the shot by Shaul.
Shaul recorded two of the Marauders six hits. He also had a stolen base. Arnold, Gregory and Eric Loxtercamp all had two hits for SCSU.
The Marauders (15-33 overall, 6-22 NSIC) and the Huskies (33-12, 22-9) close out the regular season with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. in St. Cloud.
