Box Score 2 BISMARCK, N.D.—The University of Mary softball team (20-16, 5-7) opened Wednesday with an offense onslaught, but were stalled in game two as they settled for a split against Minnesota State University Moorhead (8-15, 4-10) in Northern Sun action. Behind three home runs U-Mary cruised to a 10-1 win in the opener, but managed just two runs in the second game as it fell 5-2.
Sophomore
Demaree Rodriguez paced the Marauders offense on the day going 3-for-5 with five RBI. Senior
Cherlyn Trujillo pitched 11 of 13 innings for U-Mary allowing just three runs and striking out 16.
GAME 1 Punctuated by a game-ending three-run home run off the bat of
Kristin Ormsby, the Marauders hit a season-high three home runs en route to a 10-1 win over the Dragons in the opener.
Ormsby and Rodriguez both hit three-run home runs in the game, and
Amber Gamboa added a two-run shot of her own.
Trujillo started the game in the circle for the Marauders picking five strikeouts in the first two innings alone.
U-Mary got on the board in the first inning as Ormsby led off with a single and Gamboa reached on a fielder's choice. Ormsby came around to score after stealing third and advancing to home on an errant throw by MSUM's catcher. With one out in the inning and runners at the corners, Rodriguez homered to centerfield to give the Marauders a 4-0 lead.
U-Mary added a run in the third as Rodriguez was hit with the bases loaded.
With just one hit through three innings, MSUM led off the fourth with a single, and added a two-out double get on the board.
After Ormsby drew a lead off walk in the fifth inning, Gamboa swung first pitch blasting a home run to left center to give the Marauders a 7-1 lead.
With
Erin Keen drawing a lead off walk and
Alana Norman reaching on an infield singe, Ormsby came up to bat with two outs in the sixth. Ormsby got the green light on a 3-0 pitch and blasted a three-run homer to centerfield to give the Marauders a 10-1, six inning victory.
Trujillo pitched all six innings for U-Mary and allowed just one run, while striking a season-high 12 batters.
GAME 2 The Dragons got on the board with a two-out solo home run in the first inning of game two and never trailed on their way to a 5-2 win over the Marauders.
Rodriguez and Norman each finished the game with two hits and an RBI.
Leading 2-0 in the third, MSUM drew a walk in the third inning as U-Mary went to the bullpen brining in Trujillo for
MeLanie Rodriguez, who started the game for the Marauders. The Dragons took advantage of an error by the Marauders as the leadoff walk came around to score to give MSUM a 3-0 lead.
U-Mary went hitless in the third and fourth innings.
The Dragons led off the fifth with a single and followed with an RBI triple. The following batter grounded out to the pitcher allowing the runner to score from third to give MSUM a commanding 5-0 lead.
U-Mary recorded a hit in both the fifth and sixth inning, but it took until the seventh for the Marauders to finally get on the board.
Gamboa and
Julissa Perales led off the seventh with back-to-back singles. With one out D. Rodriguez singled to right field to score Gamboa. Keen followed with a single to load the bases for the Marauders, still with one out. Norman ensued with her fourth infield single of the day to score Perales and make the score 5-2. After a fly out by the next batter,
Allison Brown grounded into a fielder's choice to end the game.
Trujillo pitched five innings of relief for U-Mary, allowed two runs and struck out four.
With the loss the Marauders are now 1-11 when allowing their opponent to score in the first inning.
ON DECK U-Mary will be on the road this weekend as it takes on Concordia University-St. Paul on Saturday a 1 p.m. and Minnesota State University, Mankato on Sunday at noon.
