Wild Throw Delivers Wild Win as Marauders Gain Split with #3 Mavericks

Shaul, Aders score on walk off win for Marauders

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BISMARCK, N.D. – From certain defeat to a stunning victory in the span of one throw, the University of Mary baseball team gained a 2-1 walk-off win on a miscue by 3rd ranked Minnesota State University. The Mavericks gained a split of the Northern Sun doubleheader by defeating the Marauders in the second game 14-2.

In a dominating performance, Mavericks (24-7 overall, 12-4 NSIC) pitcher Mathias Butala retired 19 of 20 straight Marauders (9-21, 4-10) after allowing a bunt single by Austin Grundstad to lead off the game. With one out in the seventh, NSIC Player of the Week Jason Shaul pulled a single through the right side of the infield. Derek Somerville followed with a single pulled down the left field line between the third base bag and a diving Connor McCallum.

A double steal by Shaul and pinch runner Jeff Aders moved the winning run into scoring position before Butala struck out Andrew Beyers for the second out.

Magic struck for the Marauders with Sam Ingemansen at the plate. The senior catcher was the only U-Mary baserunner in the middle five innings when he singled in the fifth inning. Down 0-1 in the count, Ingemansen tapped a ball to the third base side of the mound. Butala fielded the ball cleanly but fired the ball past first baseman Stetson Olson down the right field line in foul territory. Before the Mavericks could field the ball, Shaul and Aders both crossed the plate for a stunning and improbable Marauders win.

An impressive pitching performance by Michael Vollrath allowed the Marauders to remain in position to capitalize on the Mavericks miscue. The junior left hander struck out four and allowed just seven hits and two walks in throwing his second complete game of the season. The win evens his record this season at 2-2.

Butala struck out 12 Marauders, giving up just four hits and didn't walk or hit a batter.

The stunning loss for Minnesota State appeared to fuel the Mavericks efforts in the second game.

MSU quickly jumped out in front in game two, scoring twice in the first and once in the second. Defensive and mental lapses by the Marauders led to a 9-run Mavericks outburst in the fourth, capped by a 3-run home run to left field by McCallum. Only one run was earned as MSU increased its lead to 12-0. The Mavericks added two more unearned runs in the sixth inning.

Somerville recorded two of the Marauders nine hits in the game, posting a single and a double in three at bats. He also scored a run. Beyer and Ingemansen had back-to-back RBI singles in the fourth inning.

Eric Peterson led the MSU attack with three hits in four at bats, scoring three times and driving in two runs. Parker Sullivan was 2-for-2, scored three times and drove in one run. Standish scored once and had four RBI.

The Marauders continue their 14-game home stand this weekend when U-Mary hosts Upper Iowa in the four-game set on Saturday and Sunday, April 12-13. Game time is 12 noon both days at the U-Mary baseball field.
