Big Innings Allow Beavers to Outlast Marauders

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BISMARCK, N.D. – Jason Shaul pounded out five hits and the University of Mary scored 19 runs but the Marauders inability to keep the Bemidji State University offense in check resulted in two losses for U-Mary. The Beavers swept today's Northern Sun baseball doubleheader with 10-9 and 12-10 wins over the homestanding Marauders.

Shaul finished the day 5-for-8 with three doubles, four runs scored and one RBI. Over the four-game weekend series, the junior leftfielder blistered the Beavers by rapping out nine hits in 14 at bats and recording a pair of three-hit games. The New Ulm, Minn., native is now hitting .396 on the season.

The Marauders opened the day by scoring four runs in the first, keyed by an RBI single from Dwight Mack and a run-scoring double by Shaul. The Beavers responded with a 6-run third inning but U-Mary regained the lead in the home half of the inning. U-Mary scored three times to go ahead 7-6 as Alex Deyle, Austin Grundstad and Dwight Mack all had run-scoring singles in the third.

The Beavers refused to yield and scored four runs in the fourth to build a 10-7 lead. The big blow was a three-run double by Dylan Webb, who hit a game-winning three run home run the previous game against U-Mary on Sunday night.

Continuing to fight, the Marauders scored on a Mack single in the fifth and a Somerville single in the seventh. U-Mary failed to complete the rally when Drake Huggans struck out Andrew Beyer to end the game, stranding two runners on base.

Mack finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored. Shaul also produced a 3-for-4 line, scoring once and driving in a run. Deyle finished with two hits and Trenten Hove and Austin Grundstad both scored twice.

Webb paced BSU with a 2-for-3 effort with four RBI and a run scored. Logan Riedel also had two hits and drove in two runs. In addition to generating nine hits, the Beavers were the recipients of 11 walks by Marauders pitchers.

Just as in the opener, the Marauders gained an early lead in game two but couldn't dam up the Beavers offense.

Trailing by one in the first, Derek Somerville blasted a double down the left field line to score Mack and knot the contest. Shaul then scored on a passed ball and a Hove bad-hop single plated Somerville for a 3-1 Marauders lead after one inning.

Keyed by a Joey Hanowski two run double, the Beavers scored four times in the third to gain a 5-3 lead.

Immediately the Marauders retaliated with four runs of their own in the home half of the third to move back in front 7-5. Another Somerville double, his second of three two-baggers in the game, scored Shaul. After a BSU error allowed Somerville to score, Hove drove in a run on a bunt single and Grundstad hit a sacrifice fly.

U-Mary tacked on three runs in the fourth as Somerville cracked a two-run double and Raymond Williams III hit a sacrifice fly to push the Marauders advantage to 10-5.

Just as it seemed as thought the Marauders were in the driver's seat, fortune reversed itself. Over the last five innings, the Marauders offense produced just one hit and one baserunner, who was subsequently caught stealing. Only 15 Marauders, the bare minimum, went to bat during that span.

BSU scored once in the fifth on a Hanowski home run before posting a three-spot in both the seventh and eighth innings. Webb singled in two runs in the seventh and back-to-back sacrifice flies in the eighth proved the key blows.

Somerville went 3-for-5 with three doubles. The senior first baseman scored three times and drove in four runs. Shaul was 2-for-4 and scored three times. Williams was 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored. Sam Ingemansen added two hits and Mack scored twice.

Tyler Nelson led the BSU attack with four hits in six at bats, scoring three runs. Hanowski finished 2-for-3 with three RBIS and three runs scored.

Ryan Rumka earned the win with 5.2 shutout innings of one-hit relief pitching. He struck out eight and didn't walk a batter.

The Marauders slip to 8-20 overall and 3-9 in the Northern Sun. The Beavers are 11-10 and 5-3.

U-Mary next hosts 3rd ranked Minnesota State University on Wednesday, April 9, at 1:30 PM.
