Salveson, Famias Combined Shutout Leads Marauders to Split with Beavers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BISMARCK, N.D. – Sam Salveson and Travis Famias combined to pitch a shutout for the University of Mary, leading the Marauders to a Northern Sun doubleheader split with Bemidji State University. U-Mary captured the opener 2-0 before BSU tallied an 8-7 win in game two.

Making his second straight collegiate career start this week after 27 straight relief appearances, Salveson pitched 6.1 scoreless innings in the Marauders 2-0 win in the opener. His first college start was a complete game 9-1 win at Wayne State College last Wednesday.

The Mandan, N.D., senior struck out three hitters and allowed seven hits and three walks to pick up his second straight win.

Shooting for a second straight complete game, Salveson retired the first batter in the seventh before a bunt single by Logan Riedel and a Jake Braun double brought the winning run to the plate.

With two runners in scoring position, Famias came on in relief and struck out Chad Hanson for the second out of the inning. The junior lefthander then induced Tyler Nelson to ground out to second for the final out of the game. It was the first save of the season for Famias.

The Marauders scored the only run they needed in the first inning. Jason Shaul hit a two-out double the opposite way down the left field line and scored on a single flared down the right field line by Derek Somerville. U-Mary added an unearned run in the sixth to pad their lead.

Shaul finished the game 3-for-3 and posted half of the Marauders hits.

Tyler Sauegling had a strong showing for BSU, allowing six hits, one unearned run and one walk while striking out five in six innings.

The Marauders jumped out to an early lead in the second contest but a five-run Beavers explosion in the sixth inning, capped by a three-run home run by Dylan Webb, proved too much to overcome.

U-Mary opened the scoring on a Shaul sacrifice fly in the first, scoring Austin Grundstad with the first run of the game. After BSU scored twice in the second on a two-run double by Cole Bjorge, another Shaul sacrifice fly evened the game 2-2 after three innings.

Trailing by one, the Marauders plated four runs in the fifth to take a 6-3 lead. A double to deep center by Shaul scored the first two runs. Sam Ingemansen soon followed with a two-out two-run single.

The Beavers took control of the game in the sixth, scoring five runs to take what proved to be an insurmountable 8-6 lead. Zach Braun and Bo Schmitz both singled in runs before Webb crushed a three-run laser shot home run to left.

U-Mary scored an unearned run in the seventh but the Marauders offense was unable to get on track against Bemidji State reliever Nate Heisick. In 4.2 innings, Heisick allowed three hits, walked one and struck out five to gain the win. Drake Huggans struck out the only hitter he faced to pick up his fifth save of the year.

Continuing his hot play, Austin Grundstad was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a walk. Shaul drove in four runs and finished 1-for-3. Dwight Mack went 2-for-2 and scored a run. Somerville scored two runs and Ingemansen scored twice.

Webb was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored for BSU. Hanson also had three hits.

U-Mary is now 8-18 overall and 3-7 in the NSIC. BSU is 9-10 and 3-3.

After playing Sunday's doubleheader at the Shiloh Christian baseball field, Monday's games against the Beavers are scheduled at the U-Mary baseball field.
