Box Score 2 BISMARCK. N.D. – In his final scheduled home start for the University of Mary, senior right-hander
Shane Trattles tossed a complete game but his efforts still left the Marauders short in a 4-2 opening game loss to Minot State University. The Beavers would sweep the doubleheader with an 8-6 win in game two.
Trattles allowed single runs in each of the first four innings to keep the Marauders in the contest. He allowed 10 hits and just three earned runs, walked one and struck out one in his second complete game of the season.
While Trattles never let the game get out of reach, Minot State Austin Zorn never let the Marauders offense get going. U-Mary scored two in the first, including a run-scoring triple from
Jason Shaul, but Zorn kept the Marauders off the board the next six innings. He allowed six hits, one earned run, and didn't record a walk or a strikeout.
Dwight Mack led the Marauders with two hits. Oliver Conner scored twice for the Beavers and four players collected two hits for MSU.
Two big innings led Minot State to the win in game two, scoring three times in the third and four in the seventh.
Down early by three, the Marauders used a two-run
Derek Somerville double and an
Andrew Beyer run-scoring single in the third to tie the game. An
Alex Deyle sacrifice fly in the fourth scored
Sam Ingemansen to provide the Marauders a 4-3 lead.
Marauders starting pitcher Nick Stobbe was strong early, allowing Minot State just the three runs in the first six innings. The game would go the Beaver way in the seventh as Minot State used two hits, an error, three walks and a hit batter to scored four runs. The big blow was a two-run double by Andrew Roach for a 6-4 MSU lead.
An RBI double by Somerville and a run-scoring ground-out by Trenton Hove in the eighth pulled the Marauders within 7-6 but U-Mary couldn't find the equalizer.
Somerville led the Marauders with two doubles and three RBIs. He also scored a run. Beyer added two hits and Shaul and Ingemansen both scored twice.
Tyler Stevenson collected two hits for Minot State, scored twice and drove in a run.
U-Mary is now 15-27 overall and 6-16 in the NSIC. Minot State is 13-21 and 7-13.
The two teams close out the four-game Northern Sun weekend with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 26, at 12 noon, when the Marauders will honor their nine seniors and the parents of all the players.
