Box Score 2 WAYNE, Neb. – Making his first collegiate start on the mound, senior right-hander
Sam Salveson was dominant in the University of Mary's 9-1 win over Wayne State College. Converted from team closer for this midweek contest, Salveson tossed a complete game to earn the Marauders a split on the road. The Wildcats captured the second game 12-4.
After 27 straight relief appearances to open his Marauders career, Salveson was injected into the starting lineup for the Marauders first midweek doubleheader of the season. For a Marauders pitching staff that had allowed 63 runs in its past six games, the Mandan, N.D., native proved to be the balm the squad needed.
Salveson tossed all seven innings, allowing just one run, five hits and three walks while striking out two. He lowered his team-best ERA to 1.76, covering 11 games and 15.1 innings this season.
Through the first three innings, Salveson faced just ten hitters. The Wildcats never had more than one hit in any inning and no more than two baserunners.
The Marauders struck first when
Trenten Hove scored on a groundout by
Austin Grundstad in the third inning.
Even 1-1 after four, the Marauders posted four runs in the fifth to gain control of the game. After
Alex Deyle scored on a bases loaded balk call,
Scott Held singled through the left side to bring home Hove and Grundstad. Held then stole second and the sophomore first baseman scored on an opposite field single to left by
Jason Shaul.
U-Mary struck for four more runs in the seventh. A Shaul double down the left field line scored both Hove and Grundstad. A defensive miscue by the Wildcats later scored Shaul before a
Sam Ingemansen single through the left side drove in
Andrew Beyer.
Hove led the Marauders 12-hit attack with a career-high three knocks in three at bats. He scored three times, also a career-best. In his last seven games the freshman center fielder has three multi-hit games and has 10 hits in his last 26 at bats.
Grundstad finished 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Shaul also went 2-for-3 with a double and a stolen base, driving in three runs and scoring once. Held finished with two RBI.
Five different Wildcats posted hits in the opener. Aaron Molinaro recorded one of the hits, drove in the lone run and walked twice.
The Marauders had a fast start in game two, scoring the first four runs of the game before the Wildcats gained complete control in a 12-4 Wayne State win.
Grundstad continued his hot hitting and opened the nightcap with a single to left center, eventually scoring on a Shaul sacrifice fly. The U-Mary second baseman then ripped a two-run triple to left in the second inning, driving in Hove and Deyle. A Held single up the middle scored the Williston, N.D., native and game two looked to be a repeat of the opener.
The Wildcats scored their first run in the second before back-to-back three run innings in the third and fourth pushed Wayne State in front 7-4. A 2-run single from Michael Herman capped the six straight runs by the Wildcats.
A 5-run uprising by the Wildcats in the seventh inning sealed the Marauders fate.
Grundstad posted his fifth straight multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-4 with a triple, a walk, two runs scored and two RBI. During his last five games, Grundstad is 13-for-22 with three walks, four doubles, a triple, ten runs scored and eight runs batted in.
Back in the starting lineup for the second game, the freshman right field Beyer went 3-for-5, a career-high for hits.
Herman led the Wayne State attack, posting for hits in five at bats. He scored three times and drove in two. Mike Servais added three hits, two runs scored and one RBI. Four other players had two hits.
U-Mary is 7-17 overall and 2-6 in the Northern Sun. Wayne State is 12-10 and 5-3.
Next up on the Marauders schedule is a four-game home stand against Bemidji State University on April 5-6. That starts 14 straight home games for the Marauders over seven dates.
