Shaul Single Gives Marauders Second Walkoff Win of Week

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BISMARCK, N.D. – Jason Shaul ripped a game-winning single deep to left field to score Austin Grundstad for the University of Mary's second walk-off win this week. The Marauders scored twice with two outs in the seventh inning of a 4-3 win over Upper Iowa University. The Peacocks responded with a 9-3 win in game two of the doubleheader.

Trailing 3-2 entering their final at bat in the seventh, pinch hitter Scott Held was hit by the first pitch of the inning. After Alex Deyle's sacrifice bunt moved Held to second, Trenton Hove struck out for the second out of the inning.

Down 1-2 in the count, Grundstad tripled to deep left center to score Held with the tying run. Dwight Mack extended the inning and bringing Shaul to the plate by earning a walk. Mack fell behind in the count 1-2 and needing to foul off four pitches to remain alive for the base on balls.

With Shaul at the plate, Upper Iowa removed starting pitcher Mason Buster for Jordan Kearns. Shaul, who singled in the seventh and scored the tying run in Wednesday's 2-1 walkoff win over #3 Minnesota State, promptly drove the first pitch from Kearns the opposite way off the left field fence for the win, touching off another wild celebration by the Marauders.

Sam Salveson picked up his third straight win and his second complete game in three starts. The senior right-hander scattered 11 hits in seven innings, allowing two earned runs while recording one strikeout and one walk. All three runs he allowed came in the fifth inning.

After pitching in relief his first 27 collegiate appearances, the Mandan, N.D., native has now won all three of his career starts. The fewest innings he has thrown in those games is 6.1 with his two other starts being seven inning complete games. His first start came in a 9-1 win at Wayne State College on April 2.

The reigning NSIC Player of the Week, Shaul finished 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Derek Somerville was 1-for-2 with an RBI on a sacrifice fly. Grundstad went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Adam Tyler was 2-for-3 for the Peacocks, driving in two runs and scoring once. Cody Booker and Ryan Citro also were 2-for-3 with a run scored.

U-Mary opened the scoring in the second game on a double steal in the first inning but Upper Iowa would post four runs in both the third and sixth innings to overwhelm the Marauders.

A two-run single by Jose Aguirre in the third allowed UIU to jump out to a 4-1 lead. U-Mary responded with one in the bottom of the third and both teams scored single runs in the fourth and the Peacocks held a 5-3 lead.

A two-run Adams double keyed the Peacocks 4-run sixth, increasing their advantage to 9-3 and effectively putting the game out of reach for the Marauders.

Grundstad finished the second game 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. He recorded half of the Marauders six hits.

Aguirre finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and three RBIs. Adams went 2-for-5 with a run scored and two driven in. Booker scored twice.

Dickson Paz pitched a 9-inning complete game for the Peacocks, striking out 13 while allowing six hits, three walks and two earned runs.

The Marauders (10-22 overall / 5-11 NSIC) and the Peacocks (9-11, 2-6) conclude their four-game Northern Sun set with a doubleheader Sunday, April 13, beginning at 12 noon at the U-Mary baseball field.
