Grundstad Drives Marauders to Split with Warriors

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BISMARCK, N.D. – Behind three doubles and four hits by Austin Grundstad, the University of Mary picked up its first Northern Sun baseball win of the season, a 15-13 decision over Winona State University. The Marauders senior second baseman recorded two more hits in the second game but the Warriors rebounded for a 13-3 win to game a doubleheader split.

Grundstad finished the doubleheader with six hits in nine at bats. The Williston, N.D., native hit three doubles, scored four runs and drove in four. He also had a walk and stole a base.

Warriors first baseman Travis Evanson had an even bigger performance, slugging four home runs and a double, scoring six times and driving in 11 runs. He was 5-for-6 in the two games.

U-Mary is 6-16 overall and 1-5 in the Northern Sun. Winona State is 7-12 and 4-3.

GAME 1: U-Mary 15 Winona State 13
An eight-run second inning and a five-run third gave the University of Mary a big advantage early and allowed the Marauders to withstand the Winona State rally efforts.

Trailing by two after a two-out Travis Evanson two-run homer in the first inning, the Marauders exploded for eight runs in the second behind several infield hits and Warriors miscues.

Trenton Hove opened the scoring with a bases-loaded run-scoring single off the Winona State right fielder's glove to plate Sam Ingemansen. Austin Grundstad followed with a bases-clearing double to push the Marauders advantage to 4-2. Three hitters later, Somerville singled down the left field line to score two more runs. A pair of Warriors errors allowed two more U-Mary runs to score and the Marauders claimed an 8-2 lead.

Starting with a run-scoring double by Grundstad, five different Marauders drove in runs in a 5-run third inning, boosting the U-Mary advantage to 13-4.

The Warriors continued to peck away at the Marauders lead, scoring single runs in the third and fourth inning before scoring twice in the fifth on back-to-back homers from Evanson and Brett Young.

U-Mary got back on the board in the sixth on a run-scoring single by Dwight Mack, scoring Grundstad for a 14-7 lead.

Keyed by a three-run Evanson home run in the sixth, the Warriors pulled within 14-11 and just kept coming. An Alex Deyle sacrifice bunt scored Ingemansen in the seventh to push the Marauders advantage to 15-11. That cushion proved sufficient as the Warriors scored two more times in the bottom of the seventh before Sam Salveson recorded the final out on a line drive to Grundstad at second.

Grundstad recoded four of the Marauders 15 hits, finishing the game 4-for-5 at the plate with three doubles, a walk, three runs scored, four RBI and a stolen base.

Mack, Scott Held, Deyle and Hove each had two hits for U-Mary. All nine Marauders in the lineup scored a run and eight recorded an RBI. Jason Shaul, Sommerville, Ingemansen and Hove all scored twice and Somerville and Deyle each drove in two runs.

Evanson finished 3-for-4 for the Warriors with three home runs. He scored four times and drove in six runs. Mike Wasilik had two hits and three RBI. Young recorded two hits, scored twice and drove in two runs. Ryan Nyhagen scored three times and had two hits for the 13-hit Warriors attack.

GAME 2: Winona State 13 U-Mary 3
Winona State continued its offensive onslaught from the first game and the University of Mary was unable to keep pace. After recording 34 hits over the last two games, the Marauders managed just five in the 13-3 loss.

Tyler Evanson opened the scoring with a three-run double in the bottom of the third inning. U-Mary responded immediately, scoring three in the fourth. With the bases loaded, Jason Shaul hit a 2-run single to right. When the ball was misplayed in the outfield, Dwight Mack also scored the equalizer.

The Warriors broke the tie with two runs in the fourth before exploding for six more in the fifth. Winona State ended the game early with the ten-run rule when Evanson hit a two-run homer in the seventh.

Grundstad finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and Shaul had two RBI.

Evanson went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and five RBI to cap a huge day for the Warriors first baseman. Tyler Nehring added three hits and five other Warriors had two hits.

The Marauders next face Wayne State College with a road doubleheader on April 2.
