Box Score 2 BISMARCK, N.D. – Whether it was a pitcher's duel or a slugfest, the University of Mary didn't have an answer for Winona State University. In a series originally scheduled for Winona, Minn., but relocated to U-Mary's baseball field, the Marauders dropped the opener 4-1 and the nightcap 14-9 to the Warriors.
Due to the site swap, Winona State made itself at home as it retained the privilege of being the home team on the scoreboard. The Warriors led for all but one inning in the two games.
The Marauders slipped to 5-15 overall and 0-4 in the Northern Sun. The Warriors are 6-11 and 3-2.
GAME 1: Winona State 4 U-Mary 1Winona State starting pitcher Chase Blazier kept the Marauders bats in check and the Warriors took advantage of an early U-Mary miscue on the way to a 4-1 victory.
Blazier struck out five Marauders and allowed just three hits, two walks and one run in six innings.
The second Warriors hitter of the game, Joseph Kubera, reached on a Marauders error and scored on a two-out single by Nathan Krause. Winona State added two more in the fourth when Brett Young tripled home Krause and scored on a wild pitch.
Trailing 4-0, the Marauders scored their lone run of the game in the sixth as
Derek Somerville singled home
Dwight Mack with two outs.
Scott Freiburger earned his fourth save of the season after pitching a perfect seventh inning, striking out two Marauders.
Shane Trattles suffered a tough loss for U-Mary, allowing three earned runs in 5.1 innings. The senior struck out four and gave up eight hits and one walk.
Ryan Nyhagen posted three of the ten Winona State hits.
GAME 2: Winona State 14 U-Mary 9Despite pounding out 18 hits, a ten-run fourth inning for the Warriors spelled disaster for the Marauders. Leading 2-0 after scoring twice in the third on a
Dwight Mack sacrifice fly and an
Andrew Beyer RBI single, U-Mary imploded in the fourth.
The first 11 Winona State hitters reached base in the inning. During the WSU run, U-Mary committed two errors, walked a hitter with the bases loaded and hit a batter to force in another run. The Warriors pounded out seven hits and used three Marauders errors, a walk and a hit batter to generate the ten runs.
The Marauders tallied twice more in the fifth but the Warriors posted four more runs over the next two innings.
After the first two batters were retired in the ninth, the next six U-Mary hitters reached base and pulled the Marauders within 14-9. With the bases loaded, the Warriors were forced to bring Frieburger back to close the contest and earn his second save of the day, a one pitch effort resulting in a grounder to second.
Four different Marauders recorded three hits in the contest and all nine starters had a hit.
Entering the game with one career hit,
Raymond Williams III had three hits in the game, recording a double and a triple. The freshman right fielder scored twice and drove in a run.
Austin Grundstad was 3-for-6, scoring twice and driving in a run. Mack went 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Somerville finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Deyle and Shaul both had two hits while Beyer and
Sam Ingemansen each drove in two runs.
Tyler Nehring paced the Warriors 13-hit attack with a 3-for-5 effort. The third baseman scored three times and drove in two runs.
The Marauders and Warriors conclude their four-game Northern Sun series with a doubleheader at the U-Mary baseball field on Sunday, March 30, at 12 noon.
