Solid Starting Pitching Debuts Highlight Marauders Losses to Rattlers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Despite receiving two solid starting pitching performances, the University of Mary was unable to solve the 15th ranked St. Mary's University pitching staff. The Rattlers swept today's doubleheader 2-0 and 10-1 to claim wins in all four games this weekend.
 
Game 1 (seven innings): St. Mary's 2 U-Mary 0
In his first game at U-Mary, sophomore starting hurler Zach Steckler allowed just two runs and five hits in 5.1 innings but Nathan Humpal was just a little better. The Rattlers starting pitcher posted seven strikeouts and allowed just four hits and a walk in a seven inning complete game shutout.  
 
The Rattlers struck first when Mario Maldonado hit a one out solo shot in the first inning. Steckler kept STMU off the board again until the fifth when Maldonado drove a one-out run scoring double to center field, increasing the STMU lead to 2-0.
 
A one-out error in the top of the seventh brought the tying run to the plate for U-Mary. Humpal responded with a strikeout for the second out and induced a tapper back to the mound to end the game.
 
Recording hits for the Marauders was Andrew Beyer, Jason Shaul, Scott Held and Mason Schiff.
 
In addition to allowing two runs, five hits and four walks, Steckler struck out three.
 
Maldonado paced the Rattlers offense with two hits, two RBIs and a run scored in three at bats. Adrian Garcia was a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored.
 
 
Game 2 (nine innings): St. Mary's 10 U-Mary 1
Making his collegiate debut, Nicholas Stobbe kept the Marauders in the final game of the weekend through six innings before the Rattlers blew the game open in the seventh.
 
A freshman from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Stobbe allowed single runs in each of the first three innings before keeping the Rattlers off the boards in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. He finished the day allowing three runs on eight hits and three walks with three strikeouts in 5.2 innings.
 
Trailing by two, the Marauders scored their lone run of the day in the third inning. Mason Schiff led off with a single and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Austin Grundstad. St. Mary's responded by scoring on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third to push the Rattlers advantage to 3-1.
 
The Rattlers scored six times in the seventh to seal the win.
 
Shaul posted two of the Marauders seven hits.
 
Scott Jones had four hits, two runs and two RBIs to lead the 17-hit Rattlers attack. Drake Roberts added three hits and two runs scored.
 
Greg Dobb pitched six innings for the win, allowing one unearned run, five hits and a walk while striking out two. Rick Villa earned the save after striking out five hitters in three innings.
 
U-Mary is 0-4 overall this season. St. Mary's is 5-1.
 
The Marauders are now off until their spring break trip to Vero Beach, Fla., on March 1-9.
