Box Score MANKATO, Minn. - Unable to slow down the top offensive team in the Northern Sun, the University of Mary men's basketball team fell behind early and never recovered in an 88-67 loss at #22 Minnesota State University, Mankato. All five Mavericks starters hit for double figures while just one player did so for the Marauders.
The Marauders (5-15 overall, 3-12 NSIC), who tied a team season-high with 11 three-pointers, never led in the game and trailed 19-4 early in the contest. The Mavericks (18-4, 12-3) opened their biggest lead of the night at 59-32 with 17:04 left in the game.
Eleven of 12 Marauders who played in the contest scored for U-Mary.
Chris Mason led the team with 11 points in a reserve roll. Both he and
Brandon Tyler nailed 3-of-6 trey attempts off the bench. Tyler scored nine points.
Germain Decoste added eight points and four rebounds.
Assem Marei led all players with 21 points for Minnesota State. The 6-foot-9 Egyptian was a perfect 9-of-9 from the field. He also had six rebounds. Zach Monaghan had 17 points and eight assists. Connor O'Brien added 16 points and Tanner Adler and Gage Wooten each chipped in 13.
U-Mary had an edge from behind the arc, making 11-of-26 trey attempts compared to a 9-for-28 effort by MSU. The Mavericks had distinct advantages in nearly everything else, shooting 55.2 per cent from the field to 39.7 per cent for the Marauders. MSU also dominated on the boards with a 44-26 rebounding advantage.
U-Mary concludes the weekend with a 6 PM game at Concordia University - St. Paul on Saturday, Feb. 1.
