Marauders Set Southerly Sails for Saturday's Contest at Wayne State

GAME NOTES

SATURDAY
Making its first road trip of the 2013 season, the University of Mary tangles with the Wayne State College Wildcats this Saturday, the southern-most member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Game time for this NSIC North vs. South divisional clash is 1 PM on September 14 at Cunningham Field on the WSC campus in Wayne, NE.

THE RECORDS
The Marauders are 0-1 overall and 0-1 in the Northern Sun... The Wildcats are 0-1 overall and 0-1 in the Northern Sun.

LAST TIME OUT
U-Mary opened the 2012 season with a 34-21 home loss to #2 Minnesota State University, Mankato... Wayne State kicked off the season with a 29-27 triple overtime loss at Northern State University.

LAST YEAR
U-Mary finished 4-7 overall in the NSIC and 1-6 in the NSIC North… Wayne State finished 6-5 overall and in the NSIC to finish 7th and was fourth in the NSIC South at 3-4.

HEAD COACHES
U-Mary's all-time winningest head coach, Myron Schulz owns a record of 97-55 in his 15th season at the helm of the Marauders. Synonymous with Marauders football, Schulz has been a member of U-Mary's coaching staff in 23 of the program's 26 seasons. He has directed the squad to six national tournament appearances and four conference titles. His teams owned a streak of nine straight winning seasons and the Marauders are 73-38 in conference games. Since starting the transition to the NCAA in 2005, U-Mary is 42-44. The Marauders are 28-33 in Northern Sun contests...  Dan McLaughlin enters his ninth season as head football coach at Wayne State College. Heading into the 2013 campaign, McLaughlin has a career record of 52-38 overall and 48-27 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
Inheriting a struggling program, McLaughlin has turned Wayne State into a constant winner with six straight winning seasons, a feat never achieved in the program's 97-year history. McLaughlin ranks second on the all-time wins list at WSC, needing 10 wins to match Del Stoltenberg (62-70-5) for the most wins by a Wildcat head football coach. McLaughlin is now the second-longest tenured coach in school history, trailing only Del Stoltenberg's 14 years from 1969-82.

FINAL SEASON FOR SCHULZ
Marauders Head Coach Myron Schulz, the man most associated with University of Mary football and the longest-tenured coach in school history, is resigning his head coaching position effective at the end of the 2013 season. Entering his 15th season at the helm of the Marauders football team, Schulz will become a faculty member in U-Mary's Gary Tharaldson School of Business. As U-Mary prepares to celebrate its 25th anniversary of Marauders football, Schulz starts his 23rd season as a member of the squad's coaching staff. His 97 wins are more than any other U-Mary head football coach. Schulz directed his teams to four conference crowns and six playoff appearances while posting nine straight winning seasons at the start of his tenure. Schulz will start his teaching duties at the completion of the football season. A search for a replacement will begin later in the fall with hopes to have a new coach in place shortly after the end of the 2013 schedule.

THE SERIES/LAST MEETING

Bagnell passed for 260 yards and Tyler Steffan made six catches for 114 yards. Lomax ran for 51. The Wildcats' Evan Johnson passed for 387 yards and ran for 35 to win NSIC Offensive Player of the Week honors. Wayne State installed field turf on their home field in the off season.

LAST WEEK: In a game where lightning delayed kickoff by 90 minutes with another 30 minute break just before half, the University of Mary kept pace with 2nd ranked Minnesota State University, Mankato through one quarter before big plays allowed the Mavericks to pull away in a 34-21 MSU win. Twice in the first quarter Craig Bagnell found Nick Jolliffe in the end zone for touchdowns, knotting the game 14-14. The Mavericks broke the tie with a field goal with 7:57 left in the first half and a 53 yard pass reception set up a Jon Wolf four-yard touchdown run for a 24-14 lead just before intermission. MSU extended its lead on a 72 yard interception return by Nathan Hancock in the third quarter. U-Mary pulled within 31-21 on a Bagnell-to-Elby Pope scoring strike with 4:45 left. MSU hit another big pass play to set up another field goal, this with two minutes left, to end the scoring. Bagnell threw for three scores and 243 yards. Jolliffe had eight catches for 87 yards and two scores. John Oyloe led the defense with two sacks and three tackles for loss. Wolf passed for 249 yards and 47 rushing yards for MSU.

HOME RENOVATIONS
The Marauders played in the freshly-named and newly renovated MDU Resources Bowl for the first time in the 2013 season opener against Minnesota State. With the addition of two locker rooms, U-Mary, along with all the main tenants, now has its own designated locker room that is decorated in Marauders colors. The $8 million in upgrades also includes a new video board, resurfacing of the track, a reconditioning of the turf, the addition of a training facility and a storage building. The spectator facility on the north side of the field - including concessions, rest rooms, ten suites, a press box and coaching booths - is scheduled for completion by November 1.

ORANGE
The Marauders debuted orange UnderArmor jerseys in their 2013 home opener.

LIGHTNING STRIKES
Lightning delayed the start of the Marauders 2013 home opener with Minnesota State by 90 minutes. Scheduled to kick off at 2:30 PM, the game actually started after 4 PM. There was an additional 30 minute delay with 1:19 remaining in the first half. Officials and coaches decided to use the lightning delay as the halftime break. When teams returned to the field, the final 79 seconds were played before moving right into the third quarter.

DIFFERENT HALVES
It took a half, but once the Marauders defense found a groove it effectively controlled the Mavericks offense. After giving up 24 points, 12 first downs and 289 yards before intermission, the U-Mary defense allowed three points, four first downs and 77 yards in the second half. Forty-nine of the second half yards came on one pass play late in the game to set up the MSU field goal with two minutes left in the game.

BEHIND THE LINE
The Marauders continue to create havock behind the line of scrimmage, making four quarterback sacks and totalling 11 tackles for loss. After one week U-Mary is 15th nationally in sacks and 14th in tackles for loss. The Marauders were among the NCAA leaders last season.

CAPTAIN TO CAPTAIN
Offensive team captains Craig Bagnell and Nick Jolliffe combined for eight receptions, 87 yards and two touchdowns, all career-highs for junior WR Jolliffe. Bagnell threw for 243 yards and three scores. The Marauders defensive captains also had fine performances. Scott Maldonado had an interception, broke up a pass and made six tackles. John Oyle registered two sacks and three tackles for loss, both game highs.

CLIMBING THE CHARTS
Entering his fourth season as the U-Mary starting quarterback, Craig Bagnell has the opportunity to hold all the major career passing records at U-Mary. He is currently in second in passing yardage and completions and fourth in touchdown passes. Another four-year starter and Marauders Hall of Fame quarterback Chris Schwab (1996-99) holds all three of these marks. Schwab leads Bagnell 7,786 to 6,644 in passing yards, holds a 607 to 528 edge in completions, and threw 73 career touchdown passes to 55 for Bagnell.

CLIMBING THE CHARTS II
John Oyloe also has a chance to move into the top career slot in tackles for loss and sacks. The senior is second in tackles for loss with 34, trailing Brooks Laber (2001-05) with 38.5. Oyloe is fourth in sacks with 21, a category led by David St. Clair (1998-99) with 30. Oyloe passed three players last week on the sack list, Nikia Parson (20 sacks), Brooks Laber (19.5) and Mike Jaskolski (19).

BOOM TIME
All-NSIC North punter Tyler Ryan had a tremendous opening game, averaging 51 yards per punt on seven attempts. He crushed one ball 75 yards. One punt was downed inside the 20 yard line but three went into the end zone for touchbacks. Only one of his attempts was returned for MSU for all of one yard.

FATHER TO SON
True freshman Jonah Hoe caught three passes for 31 yards and ran once for one yard. He is the son of U-Mary graduates Keola and Heather Hoe. Keola was a member of the Marauders first team in 1988.

1st
In his second year with the Marauders, former University of South Dakota basketball player Allan Saint-Gelais caught his first collegiate pass. The Guadeloupe, Carribean Island native had a 28 yard catch in the third quarter... Several Marauders saw their first action for the Blue and Orange in the MSU game: Peter Luton, Deon Paulson, Vince Ferrante, Seth Walton, CJ Lundy, Danielle Whitaker, Patrick Ryan, Jonah Hoe, Landon Smith, Cole Gessler, Brydon Peacock, Zach Podoll, Allen Vaiao, Leighton Talmadge, Maceo Brown and Jake East.

CATCH ME IF YOU CAN
Elby Pope posted the two longest punt returns of his career to set up two Marauders touchdowns against Minnesota State. The junior All-NSIC North wideout had a 21 yard return to the MSU 31 in the first quarter, leading to a U-Mary scoring drive that tied the game at 14-14. In the fourth quarter he burst 34 yards to the MSU 47. Pope would finish off the scoring drive with a three yard touchdown reception. For the game he returned three punts for 52 yards. His longest previous return was 17 yards. In 2012 he gained a total of 39 yards on 12 punt returns.
