Box Score Rochester, MN—The University of Mary's up-and-down season came to a disappointing close Friday night. Tied through six and a half, the Marauders surrendered a walk off home run in the bottom of the seventh as they fell to Winona State by a final of 1-0.
Playing in the final game of her career,
Jessica Alvarado was one of three Marauders to record a hit. U-Mary's center fielder finished her career with 216 hits, second most in NCAA program history (since 2006).
The only run of the game came off the bat of WSU shortstop Jessica Kullmann, Kullman took the first pitch in the bottom of the seventh to right field for a walk off home run.
Starting in the circle
Cherlyn Trujillo pitched six strong innings allowing just one earned run and striking out five. Picking up her 200th strikeout earlier in the day, Trujillo brought her season total to 207.
Winona State's Ashley Walker pitched a complete game shutout allowing just three hits. The Warriors' hurler struck out eight along the way and only issued one walk.
The game proved to be a pitchers duel from the onset. After Alvarado led off the game with a single, seven consecutive U-Mary batters were sent down in order.
Alana Norman broke that streak with a double down the left field line, but was stranded in the third. The Marauders' best chance to score came in the fourth when
Brittney Hadley singled and
Demaree Rodriguez reached on a fielder's choice with one out. A double play would end the inning, however, as U-Mary was unable to score.
Trujillo scattered five hits through the first six innings and only allowed three runners to reach scoring position. All three of those instances the lefty was able to pitch out of unscathed. With the Marauders' bats being stymied by the Warriors' Walker, Trujillo's effort was not enough as the home run in the bottom of the seventh sealed the deal.
With the loss U-Mary falls to 24-19 overall (13-11 NSIC). This is the fourth consecutive year the Marauders have won 24 or more games. With the win Winona State improves to 33-11 (17-5 NSIC) and advance to the next round of the NSIC Tournament. Today's 1-0 loss marks the third time this season U-Mary has fallen to WSU by a score of 1-0.
