Box Score 2 Minot, ND – A total team effort earned the University of Mary baseball team a split at Minot Sate University. After dropping the opener 7-5, eight different Marauders recorded hits and
Mason Schiff posted an impressive relief effort as U-Mary rebounded for an 8-4 win.
The Marauders (17-19-1 overall, 8-13 Northern Sun) and the Beavers (13-25, 5-17) conclude the 2013 regular season on Saturday, May 4, in Minot, ND.
GAME ONE
Minot State scored first and last on the way to a Beavers 7-5 win in a game that featured four lead changes.
Down 3-0 after one inning, the Marauders began to fight back in the second, scoring a lone run on an RBI single through the left side by
Alex Deyle to score
Derek Somerville.
Kyal Williams cracked a 2-run home run in the third to tie the game.
James Carroll followed with a double and eventually scored the go-ahead run on a miscue by the Beavers.
Jordan Gilmore pushed the Beavers back in front with a two-run single in the fourth.
The Marauders loaded the bases in the fifth on singles by
Jason Shaul and
Kyal Williams before Carroll was hit by a pitch. Somerville, who just missed a grand slam when his drive down the left field line sailed just foul, drove in Shaul on a ground ball fielder's choice for the only run of the inning, evening the game at 5-5.
The Beavers won the game in the seventh. A single, an error and a passed ball pushed two Minot State runners into scoring position, with both scoring on sacrifice flies for the game-winning runs.
Williams posted three hits in four at bats, scoring once and driving in two runs with his home run. Shaul was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Carroll also had two hits and scored once.
Gilmour led MSU with three hits, scoring once and driving in two, as the Beavers played their first home game since 2011.
GAME TWO
Trailing 3-1, the Marauders exploded for five runs in the fourth inning to claim a split on the day.
After three walks loaded the bases, Shaul claimed a fourth walk to force in the first run of the inning. Williams singled home the second run and a balk forced home a third. Carroll singled in a run through the left side and Somerville concluded the scoring with a sacrifice fly.
After Minot State closed the game to 6-4 with a single run in the fifth, U-Mary doubled its advantage with single runs in both the seventh and eight.
Sam Ingemansen had a single through the left side to score Stevenson and Williams hit a sacrifice fly.
Schiff held the Beavers offense in check, allowing one run in six innings of relief. The freshman from Dickinson, ND, allowed just four hits and one run. He didn't walk a hitter and struck out two.
Somerville and Ingemansen both had two hits for U-Mary. Williams drove in three and scored once. Deyle, the only U-Mary player without a hit, scored twice in the game.
For the second straight game, Gilmour had three hits for MSU, scoring three times.
