Somerville Slugs Game-Winning Double to Lift Marauders to Split with Wolves

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Bismarck, ND – Derek Somerville cracked a game-winning double to highlight an eighth inning rally by the University of Mary, allowing the Marauders to salvage a doubleheader split with Northern State University. U-Mary captured the nightcap 4-2 after dropping the opener 12 -2 to the Wolves.
 
Trailing 2-1 in a pitchers duel, Jason Shaul opened the home half of the eighth inning with a bunt single down the third base line. A walk to Kyal Williams and a balk pushed both runners into scoring position. A sacrifice fly by James Carroll pulled the Marauders even, setting the stage for Somerville. The Marauders third baseman lofted a double into left center to score Williams from second. Michael Stevenson then lined a single to right center off the glove of Wolves second baseman Cameron Lehner, who leaped high but couldn't come down with the ball, allowing Somerville to score the third run of the inning and push U-Mary's lead to 4-2.
 
Kyle Williams moved from first base to the mound to close out the game. The senior righthander from Adelaide, South Australia, retired three of the four hitters he faced, allowing just one single, to earn his first save of the season.
 
Michael Vollrath hurled the first six innings for U-Mary, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks. The Marauders bullpen closed out the game with Travis Famias and Christopher Jolly, who picked up the win, joining Williams in pitching shutout ball.
 
Nathan Nietfeld was strong on the mound for the Wolves. He gave up an unearned run in seven innings, allowing six hits and one walk while striking out six.
 
Sam Ingemansen led the Marauders with three hits in four at bats. Carroll had two hits and drove in two runs. Stevenson also had two hits. Shaul scored twice.
 
Lehner led NSU with three hits.
 
The win snapped a five game losing streak for the Marauders.
 
The opener was decided in the third inning when the Wolves scored nine runs, all unearned, and U-Mary committed two errors. Northern State collected six hits in the stanza.
 
Mo Burrough and Williams both posted two hits for U-Mary in the game. Burrough scored twice and stole two bases.
 
Casey Bohms, the Wolves leadoff hitter, was 3-for-4. He scored four times, doubled twice and drove in two runs. Robbie Rocamora finished 3-for-5, driving in four runs and scoring once. Maurice Rocamora was 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.
 
U-Mary is 16-18-1 overall and 7-12 in the Northern Sun. NSU is 14-24 and 7-17.
 
The Marauders conclude the regular season with a four game series at Minot State University on Friday and Saturday, Mary 3-4.
